Buckle up your seat belts, "Mirfandas," because Colleen Ballinger's new Netflix's series Haters Back Off! based on her YouTube personality MirandaSings is one crazy ride. After only watching two episodes, I can tell you this: This show is everything you need to see.
The first episode begins with Miranda belting out (sort of) to Defying Gravity from the Broadway musical Wicked while being filmed by her Uncle Jim in her bedroom. According to this marvelous five-step plan he has developed, he is sure that his niece is well on her way to becoming a star. After giving up on his dream of twirling ribbons and flags in his high school color guard team, he is destined to make sure that none of his other family members make the same mistake, especially Miranda. From there, it just gets funnier.
Joining the cast is Miranda's mother. She is easily controlled by Miranda and Uncle Jim, since she is quite timid. Trying to put her input into everything, she is immediately struck down by these two, which makes it harder for her to bond with her family. Oh, and she is trying to find a man. You want to feel bad for her, but at the same time you want to laugh at all of the things that happen to her.
Then there is Miranda's sister, Emily, the only sane character on the show. Even though she is obviously fed up with her family, she seems to care a little and have a sliver of sympathy for them. She is completely embarrassed by Miranda, especially since she decided to become this famous YouTube star. Emily's goal, it seems, is to make sure no one knows that Miranda is her sister, and if we did not love to watch Miranda carry out her crazy adventures, we would probably do the same. Or would we?
How can I forget Patrick? He lives down the street from Miranda and saves her a special popsicle with a gum ball in it just for her. He even has a name tag on it. It is obvious that he is in love with her, because who else would take the time to watch a YouTube video on THREE different computer monitors to ensure that it goes viral? (Confession time: I have done this with numerous One Direction videos, so I can relate.) He is also overprotective of Miranda. When Miranda was convinced that someone's comment on her video was a death threat, he went above and beyond with protecting her by carrying around two samurai swords to defeat this hater.
This is all that I can really say without spoiling too much of the show. I could go on with what I have watched so far, but, really, you need to experience this show for yourself. This article cannot put into words how wonderfully hilarious it is.
