THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS
Girlmore Girls: A Year in the Life finally graced our Netflix screens on November 25th. We’ve all been waiting to see our favorite girls back in action in Stars Hollow. We’ve all grown up with Rory and Lorelai, personally I liked them so much that I thought my life was like their life at one point except I have two parents, me and my mom aren’t that witty, I’m not as smart as Rory, I don’t come from a wealthy family (sometimes I question Lorelai’s choice to leave because as a broke college student I could use some money), and my hometown isn’t that small and close knit. Anyways, here are my thoughts about the new season or four episodes, I’m not sure what to call it. In case you didn’t read the title of this article, THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS (sorry but you’ve had four days to watch it by now, if you haven’t that’s your loss and you clearly have a life, unlike me). Also I’m writing this a few days after I watched, so details may be missed.
There are four episodes for each of the seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). So Rory returns from London to Stars Hollow for a visit. We find out Lorelai is together with Luke and has been for a while (yay finally). We quickly discover their eating habits are still the same, gotta love the Gilmore girls. Rory bounces back and forth between London, New York, and Stars Hollow. While in London, she stays with Logan, yes Logan, who is engaged!!! Still as rich and handsome as ever, they have flings when she comes into town. Rory’s work life is a bit rocky and a few jobs fall through (see even people who go to Yale don’t have steady jobs, mom!). Rory then decides to move back home and the people of Stars Hollow are thrilled but Rory is not. She feels like a failure. Poor Rory, we’ve all been there.
On the other hand, Emily is coping with Richard’s death and hired a new maid (as usual) and the whole maid’s family moves into the house, which is interesting because the house is filled with this family that Emily can’t understand, language wise. Lorelai is kind of stuck in a rut, she feels like something is missing in her life and can’t figure it out. Luke and her visit a surrogacy agency which Paris runs to explore that option, however Luke is not on board. Things between her and Luke are weird so she decides to go hiking on this big camping trail, yes Lorelai doing outdoorsy things, very shocking. Stars Hollow puts on an awful musical about the town’s history and Rory takes over as editor for the Stars Hollow Gazette.
Okay to sum this up really quickly (I’ve never been good at summaries), Logan and Rory have a few more rendezvous, she sees Jess and Dean, Lorelai goes to California to hike, doesn’t end up hiking, returns back, marries Luke (FINALLY), and Emily moves to Nantucket or something. Rory ends things with Logan, I mean the man is getting married. She then decides to write a book about her mom and her (Jess’s idea). Oh and did I mention that the last line was Rory telling her mom she was pregnant?!?! Yeah that happened.
After watching the whole series, I am in SHOCK. One, they can’t just end it like that can they? That last line is just begging for more episodes. We don’t even know who the father is! It could be Logan or a one night stand she had with a guy in a Wookie costume while in New York!! My money is on Logan, who is getting married (ugh why couldn’t she sleep with Jess, they’re my OTP). Or maybe she did and they just didn’t tell us because they’re gonna add another season right? It’s always good to think positive. Also I can’t get over Emily, I forgot to mention above that she quit her DAR club and sold the house, how crazy is that? So unlike her but I loved every second of it. Honestly, I’m glad Lorelai and Luke finally tied the knot, it’s been a long time coming. I’m also glad we got to see all the old characters, including Logan (for a brief second, he didn’t have any lines), Suki, Michel, and Paris (yes she’s still as crazy as ever).
Okay so here’s my honest opinion, I loved it! Aside from the many (a little too much for me) pop culture references and the 20 minute long musical, it was great. Usually things like this typically suck but it honestly felt like the show never ended. Yes the characters aged, but their stories we’re the same and everything fit together well. Let’s hope we get more episodes because I cannot sleep until I know who Rory’s baby daddy is.
