So, if you’re like me, you have listened to Ed Sheeran’s new album, Divide, nonstop for the past week or so. At this point, I could honestly do an entire karaoke performance of the album because I know all of the words.
Here are some thoughts:
Supermarket Flowers Okay, we just need to discuss this one first. This one makes me cry buckets of tears as soon as I hear the first notes at the beginning. The words break your heart. They are beautiful. I did some research about this song and Ed wrote it about his grandmother who had passed away. After learning that, I think I cry harder every time I hear it now.
Perfect A simple, sweet love song. This will most likely appear at multiple weddings in 2017. It’s also an adorable song for guys to send/sing to girlfriends. (you’re welcome guys, you’d better thank Ed)
What Do I Know? “Love can change the world in a moment” Yes. Yes. Yes. Thank you, Ed.
New Man So, is Ed the side guy? I’m not quite sure but this is a fun one. Ed addresses the “murse” in this song by talking about the “man bag on the shoulder” but calls it a purse. That’s a topic that is definitely song-worthy and I’m glad it was finally mentioned.
Dive This song is basically a “hey I’m falling for you so don’t screw me over” song. I love it.
Nancy Mulligan This song makes me want to go buy some clogging shoes and learn how to play the fiddle. It’s so upbeat and so fun to jam to in the car. It is definitely in the running for my favorite on the album. He stretched it a little bit by changing the pronunciation of religion but we will forgive him for that.
Happier The ultimate after-a-breakup song. This one gets you in the feels really quickly.
Barcelona The heavy breathing at the beginning of the song honestly freaks me out. Great song other than that, but I can’t get past the creepy panting.
Save Myself This is a good one to belt out and eat ice cream to. Feelings. Feelings. Feelings. It makes me want to find Ed and just hug him and tell him that he’s going to be okay.
Shape of You So many people judged the album by this song alone and that is just not okay. I do like the song but I have heard it so many times on the radio by now, that I skip it almost every time it comes up.
Hearts Don’t Break Around Here Ed is a sweetheart. He is very good at making words into songs that make you feel A LOT. The “She is” part reminds me a lot of the song “She Is” by Ben Rector it’s amazing)
Bibia Be Ye Ye Fun fact!! This gibberish that none of us know how to say exactly right means, “all will be well” in the Ghanaian Twi language.
How Would You Feel? This is another beautiful song that will most likely be played at weddings. It’s also a “dance in the kitchen” type of song.
Eraser It took me several listens to realize he was saying "eraser" in the song. Ed’s songs where he raps are always fun but hard to learn the words to. A lot of the lyrics in the album, and this song, mention not having a “uni degree” aka no college degree. Ed is doing a pretty dang good job without a degree.
Castle on the Hill I just love that “Tiny Dancer” has a little shout out in this song because that is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Galway Girl According to Urban Dictionary, a “galway girl” is a girl with black hair and blue eyes. So congrats all you girls with black hair and blue eyes, Ed wrote a song to you all.
To summarize, Ed is a musical genius and knows how to get you in the feels but happily singing at the top of your lungs in the same album.
