The NBA off-season is always a wild time, but this year, it seems to be a rough time to be a Spurs fan.
Coming from a born and raised, life-long fan of the San Antonio Spurs—whose dad had her watch the 1999 NBA championship as an actual infant—it's a really REALLY rough time to be a Spurs fan.

From Tim Duncan (who I share a birthday with) retiring in 2016, the San Antonio Spurs I grew up with have steadily been going away. And now with Tony Parker going to Charlotte this year, my heart has been broken yet again. Kyle "Slo-Mo" Anderson getting an offer from the Grizzlies made me sad.
Manu, you better not be going anywhere.
However, in the midst of me being sad about players leaving this off-season, there has been one Spurs player that has made me, the world, and San Antonio, Texas more upset than anything else—Kawhi Leonard wants to leave.
At first, this also shattered me, but now it's kind of just upsetting. Kawhi isn't really talking about what he's feeling and what his plan is.
Now, he doesn't have to talk if he doesn't want to, and I understand that he is unhappy with the Spurs' treatment of his injury this past season, but hear me out.
Kawhi Leonard was going to be paid 20 million dollars this year. 20 million.
This last year, he got paid 18 million dollars, and he barely even played!
The Spurs are paying a bunch of money for him to be the star player on a respectable team that wins championships! (Which he, himself, has won!) He was the MVP for the 2014 NBA Championship! He is being paid a bunch of money to be a superstar in a city that loves him!
He doesn't have to like those things, but he should at least acknowledge that these are people that love him. If he's going to leave, at least tell us why.
"But Penny, Kawhi said that he doesn't care about money! He just wants out of San Antonio!"
OK, fair point. But he wants to go to Los Angeles, and when the public is asked why, some people have said it's to "improve his brand". That's a very financially-fueled motive.
WHICH IS ACTUALLY FAIR ENOUGH.
The San Antonio Spurs have a smaller market than a lot of NBA teams, and Kawhi wanting to expand his market makes sense. He's talented and could feel like he's not reaching the biggest audience possible by being in San Antonio.
But he's not saying that.
He's not saying anything.
I respect any and all of your motives for leaving, Kawhi. You gotta look out for number one and I can't fault you for that. We grow and we move on from past chapters in our lives. However, we also have to be honest about our motivations.
Kawhi, I thank you for all you've done for the Spurs and I hope you continue to do things for whatever team you end up on.
The Spurs will grow and move on and flourish again because that's what we do.
Go Spurs Go.
