MY SURPRISE FIND WHEN CLOSET PURGING

When cleaning out my closet I noticed that my style had changed, then i found out why it had and was so happy.

I have never been the kind of person to spend the weekend at home in my room. I actually really hate not having weekend plans, however the cold that I am suffering with this weekend is keeping me from going out the bars or dates so I have just been in my room. However after spending a couple of hours in bed, I got really bored of just watching lifetime movies and thus decided to do a more productive activity. I purged my closets and after I filled up four trash bags to be donated I came to a realization. That realization was that my style and a lot of who I am has really changed over the years. When I was in high school, I admittedly went through a terrible attention-seeking phase; this resulted in a lot of super bright neon V-necks and, of course, the worst attention-seeking pattern of them all was all over my closet: zebra print. In my late teens, I had a regrettably profound obsession with zebra print. I had a zebra print bed cover, zebra print floor mats in my car, and for some ungodly reason reflective zebra workout shorts that are now in my donation pile along with a lot of hyenas and reflective clothing. Fake jewelry costume was another horrible plague that befell my closet, along with about half a dozen rings that had the gold paint flaking off of them. I also had a rhinestone cross, but not any rhinestone cross I had one that was about 6 inches long, and so thick and heavy that it hurt to wear. So when I closed the last bag and saw all the reflective gold, neon, horrible fake silk, etc. I came to the a conclusion that's actually rather fulfilling. My style changed, yes it changed, to mostly deep and solid colors, modest yet still fun button downs, absolutely no zebra print whatsoever, and tasteful yet still fake silver jewelry. My style did not just change because I decided to get new clothes. The reason my style changed is because I became confident in myself, thus stopping what was once my need to turn peoples heads by dressing up like a traffic cone or an animal that can be found at the zoo. Only in the recent years of my life have I gained the confidence to believe in myself and my ability to gain peoples attention positively though conversation. It feels so good to have indirectly been reminded about how much I have matured and how far I have come. Since 90% of all the clothing I got rid of was too small for me and, although no longer my style, still physically good, it is also nice to know that it will go to someone in need. I suggest that everyone try doing the same activity that I did. Worst case scenario, all you gain is some extra closet space and that's never bad.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
