My Summer Reality

What Summer Is Really Like

Everyone's expectations of summer consist of getting drunk on the beach with their friends, spending the warm summer nights out until 3 am at a bonfire or a party. But, in reality, my summer is far from that.

1. Work: ALL THE TIME

I work at a day camp near my house. I love it, I really do, but when my friends want to take a day to go to the beach in the middle of the week, I hang my head in shame and explain that I have to work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day.

2. Your friends are nowhere to be found.

Your college friends went home, your home friends are away on vacation or working away from home. Even my sister goes to camp for 6 weeks so I'm left alone most of the time. Thank god I have a dog.

3. Going to the beach is fun, until you end up like a lobster.

When you're fair skinned, going to the beach ends up being a painful experience. Remember sunblock, my friends!

4. If you don't have a pool, you need to mooch off of your friends that do in order to cool down.

"Hey, wanna hang out?" "Yeah, can I come to your house and go swimming because I'm dying here"

5. Parties at night turn into drinking with your parents.

Most of the time, when I try to make plans with my friends, I end up drinking in my backyard with my parents.

7. Cute Dates? Nope.

I live in Massachusetts, my boyfriend lives in Illinois so therefore there are only FaceTime dates for us.

8. But mostly, I can't wait to make new memories this summer!

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Economic Benefits of Higher Wages

Nobody deserves to be living in poverty.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
