A Summer Of Nothing

Life is what you make it and so was my summer.

A Summer Of Nothing
Galiana Clark

When I was younger I thought that every one got a summer. It was very confusing when I realized that I was out of school but my dad still had to work. It was even more so when my mom had to teach summer school. I had thought that summer was full of fun and games and I'm starting to realize that summers may be over.

Like many of my peers, I worked this summer. When I wasn't working, I was sleeping. When I wasn't sleeping I was cleaning. I really didn't do much else.

And yet I did so much.

I hung out with my brother.

Brothers are the best, especially mine.

I watched my friend try to dive into my car via the window.

I was lucky enough to have this moment recorded.

I danced in an empty parking lot, in the rain, with my car music blasting.

Highly suggested if you are a free spirit who could care less about your clothing for the rest of the day. (It was pretty late anyway.)

I had my confidence tested.

You can't let anyone make you feel less than you are.

I went on road trips; short and long.

I went to Butler, Erie, New York, and every where in between. Not really, but maybe one day.

I took people to their first visit to Mount Washington.

Go there, go again.

I took too many pictures.

It might be a problem, tbh.

I went to the drive in for the first time.

I'm happy to say that this experience was enjoyable. I highly suggest, and I will and have gone again. I would not suggest watching a horror movie though, because being in the dark around trees and noises and then driving in the dark around trees and noises is just a little daunting.

I went to a Hookah bar for the first time.

The atmosphere was very cool. I went to Casablanca Hookah Lounge in Erie.

I participated in movie nights.

I made tons of food.

I played with puppies.

I designed a tattoo.

I helped with my little brother's girl problems.

This wasn't fun because it made me realize that he's all grown up.

I laughed.

I had sleepovers.

Lots of them.

I celebrated my grandparents with family whom I hadn't seen in a while.

I learned how to make sushi.

And it was actually good.

I wall twerked.

I went to a club.

I went to Pamela's for the first time.

I hiked and got lost and then found myself.

I witnessed the kindness of others.

I got loads of free Chipotle.

Because I work there and it's amazing.

I went to a fair.

I saw fireworks that seemed like they were going to land on me.

I FaceTimed my best friend and her daughter.

I did the Night Nation Run.

I watched the sunrise.

And set.

I stayed in an Airbnb for the first time.

Do it, do it, doooo it.

I went through old pictures that I'd never seen before.

I met new people.

I got sunburnt.

Despite my prior article ... 'Protect Your Face' though I can say that it wasn't nearly as bad.

I went to a wedding and danced till my feet hurt and beyond.

I slow danced with my grandpa, I dance battled with my brother. 'Twas a pretty good time.

I experienced a cigar club.

Only because it was in the basement of the reception and it was also where the bathrooms were BUT I did look around and sit for a while...because it was colder...lol.

I got my first tattoo.

WITH MY GRANDMA; yeah she's pretty cool. My mom and aunt were also there...but they already had tattoos sooooooooo.

I had to push a car for the first time.

My car broke down, but I felt pretty bad ass pushing my car through an intersection...

I saw the end of a rainbow.

I didn't know that this was possible until it happened...as for the gold wellll, I guess you better find an end and see.

I didn't accomplish cleaning my room.

I tried on multiple occasions, but it didn't really happen.

So, when I briefly reflected on my summer, it was easy to remember the day to day stuff. Then, I went back (through all the pictures I took) and relived my summer. I did a lot. Some of the things aren't necessarily anything special but they are to me and that's what is important. Remember those crazy moments in your life. Remember the chill moments in your life. Remember that summer is what you make it. The summer that we used to have before jobs and life may be over but make your life that. Do things. Celebrate. Laugh. Be present.

That's all. I hope you all have enjoyed your summers and I hope I see you soon.

Sidenote: I wrote summer so many times that I thought I spelled it wrong so I google searched it ...

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
