Now, let me first start off by saying, see this movie. I will save you the trouble of having any doubts about this entry into the DC cinematic universe. I really was looking forward to seeing this because it would have made up for the extremely dark tone of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The movie does so many things right, but as with all things, there are some bad. Here's my review:
When you first get introduced to the Suicide Squad, you get an idea of each member's attitude and characteristics. Margot Robbie was a perfect choice for the role of Harley Quinn. She excels at showing us the crazy side of Harley, but I just couldn't help but fall in love with it. Another character that caught my attention was Deadshot. I was a bit skeptical when I heard about the casting of Will Smith. I didn't know if he would be a valuable addition to the DCU, but he more than fits the bill. You get to see that he isn't such a bad man, he has some feelings, mainly for his daughter, whom he wishes to see. You get to see a cameo from the Dark Knight himself when we get a view of Deadshot's backstory.
Speaking of cameos, there's one that you could say was really quick, it was there, but gone in a flash. If you didn't pick up one what I was putting down, I'm talking about the Flash. You get a quick couple seconds of him on screen. I really enjoyed this because you get an idea of what kind of effects they'll be using in the later movies such as Justice League or even the Flash Movie.
One thing that I wish they would've done more of is to give a idea of what the Joker has been through to be the way he is. Now I know that this is another iteration of the Joker on film, but they didn't spend nearly as much time as I thought they would've with him. He is, at least to me, one of the key members of the Suicide Squad. His screen time was minimal, and even Jared Leto, who played him, voiced his disappointment with the cutting of some of his scenes.
The action in the movie is pretty phenomenal. You get a good use of CGI along with the very well used practical effects that blend together so seamlessly. The use of practical effects was a good choice in my opinion. There is no need to continue to overuse the CGI. Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman really used a lot of CGI, which don't get me wrong, it can be good, but it can also be an eyesore. One of my favorite parts is when you get to see Deadshot just mowing down the oncoming baddies with perfect accuracy. It's action was quite on target. Alright, I get it, I'll stop with all of the horribly placed puns. Now back to the action, there were some scenes that really stood out to me as well put together, such as the fight with one of the main villains, Incubus. All around I would say they have the right amount of action to keep your eyes glued to the screen for the movie's two hour and ten minute runtime.
The comedy is well used throughout the film as well. They ended up having to do some reshoots before the film came out to add a little bit more the the movie. In the trailers we had seen a large majority of the jokes and punchlines that would be in the final movie, and they didn't want us to leave the movie feeling cheated out of the humor that you would expect from such a band of misfits.
Alright, let's talk about the predictability. You can see where most turns are coming and there isn't much that a normal person could miss if you watch the movie. There are several moments where I told myself, "I knew that was coming."
The movie does a good job of keeping us entertained, but it doesn't always give us a lot to work with. Compared to the other DC movies that had been released, I feel like they could've added a little bit more to the movie. We weren't jam packed with origins stories, hidden easter eggs, and what not like from the other movies. Granted, there are a few easter eggs that I was lucky enough to catch, but I won't spoil those for you guys.
All around, this movie is definitely worth a view if you are a DC Comics fan, or if you like superhero movies. I was skeptical when I entered the theatre because everyone knows Marvel rules the cinematic universe, and DC rules the TV universe. I was pleasantly surprised, and I would definitely see this movie again if given the opportunity to.
My Review: 8/10
