As we move through these first few months of the year, life can be a whirlwind. I know personally each week seems to fly by as I am constantly doing one thing or another. Because of this, the start of the year can seem like a distant memory--just like the resolutions we made then.
New Year's Resolutions are all about bettering yourself in some fashion, which can be incredibly difficult. It's hard to get up without hitting snooze when you stay up to do the nightshift at work. Going to the gym can be hard when your classes take up most of the day and tire you out. Eating right is near impossible when your options are limited to ramen and cheap fast food.
In the beginning you stay strong, power through. And then one day, you slip up. Just the once and then you're back to your discipline. Then two days later:another mistake. And this one lasts a little longer. This goes on, the breaking of your resolution becoming more frequent and longer in length until eventually you realize you haven't stuck to it in a week. And by that point you just give up because you have already failed.
But that isn't true. One stumble is not equivalent to an entire collapse. The thing is, even if you only stuck with a habit for two weeks, your brain has now been conditioned just a bit more to follow it. So if you were to start back on your resolution, it will be that much easier to get into it again. It is about carving that pathway in your mind until the breaks become more and more infrequent to the point of extinction.
I get it, life gets in the way sometimes. And it can be hard to uptake new habits. Everyone is going to struggle somewhat. But even if you haven't gone on your "daily" run in weeks, it is not too late to start it up again. If you've fallen off the rails, just get right back on them. Wash, rinse, repeat. The year may not be new, but your motivation can be.
