The American Olympic team won a total 121 medals, that's 46 golds, 37 silvers and 38 bronzes. This is the most the U.S. team has won ever in a non-boycotted Games. To keep up the excitement, if you didn't know, the United States collected about half of those medals in Swimming and Track and Field. 33 medals were won in swimming and 32 medals in track and field. Though there were 5 moments during this Olympic that you'd hate to miss.
1. Swimming
Michael Phelps returned for his fifth and last Olympic Games with a bang. He won 5 gold medals this year and one silver. Overall, adding in his other Olympic wins to a total of 28 medals! In his entire Olympic career Phelps has won 23 gold medals. He definitely made a silent statement that when it comes to swimming he is one of the best. Though Michael Phelps wasn't the only swimmer stealing spotlights. Teenage swimmer Katie Ledecky set two world records during the Olympics. She also won four gold medals and one silver medal during this Olympics.
2. Track and Field
Out of the 32 medals won in track and field, 13 of those medals were gold. The U.S. Women's team did a podium sweep in the 100-meter hurdles. The women that did it were Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin. Alison Felix took home three medals to become the women with the most wins in Olympic track. She has taken home 9 medals overall. 6 of those medals were gold. Ashton Eaton tied an Olympic record to become the first U.S. decathlete to repeat as Olympic champion since Bob Mathias. Now I know this person isn't part of the U.S team, I thought he deserved a shout out for his amazing Olympic performance, and when I say amazing I mean extraordinary. If you blinked you would have missed it. -Okay, I may be stretching it-, This man is known as the fastest man alive. He was born in Sherwood Content, Trelawny, Jamaica. This person is a 9-time world champion and is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records, along with the world record for the 4 by 100 relay. This person name is Usain Bolt, and despite this being his last Olympic run, he will definitely be in the history books.
3. Basketball
The U.S Basketball Olympic team won their third straight gold medal. The U.S team won against Serbia, 96-66 to win the gold and close out the Olympic tournament. If we're going to speak about basketball and the Olympics, we have to talk about Camelo Anthony as well. Carmelo Anthony has never won an NBA title and hasn't gotten past the second round of the playoffs, but when it comes to the Olympics, this is Camelo Anthony's third gold medal in a row. This Olympic game would be his last run with Team USA and he did it with style, becoming the top scorer in U.S Olympic history, scoring 293 points in Olympic competition.
4. Women's Gymnastic: The Final Five
I am personally psyched to be writing about the US women's Gymnastic" team because they are amazing. They call themselves the final five, and you may be wondering why, well in the next Olympic Games, the team number will be dropping from five members to four, so these five women are truly the final five. Who are the members of the final five? Well if you don't know them by now they are Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian, Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, and Laurie Hernandez. The final five won the gymnastic team final taking home the gold, they won with a score of 184.897, winning by a margin of 8 points. This is the LARGEST margin of victory at a major meet! Now, that was just the team competition. Simone Biles won gold in the all-around individual gymnastic finals and Aly Raisman won silver. This is the second time in history that the Americans have taken gold and silver together, the first time was in 2008. Simone Biles also won a gold on the women's floor exercise, women's vault, and a bronze on the balance beam. Totaling up to 5 medals for the extraordinary gymnastic, four of those five golds. Laurie Hernandez won the silver on the balance beam. Though I do want to stop and credit her on her team floor routine, she was amazing and always a joy to watch. Madison Kocian won the silver in the individual uneven bar finals. The silver in the floor exercise went out to the final five-member Aly Raisman. That's 8 medals for team USA! Though I do need to give a shout out to Team Romania, for all you gymnastic newbies, Romania is was a gymnastic powerhouse, failed to qualify for a full team. Romania went into the Olympics with a team of one, putting their hopes on Catalina Ponor, and even though she failed to win a medal, her effort was noted.
5. The Japanese Prime Minister
This last point made me super hyped for the 2020 Olympics in Japan. If you haven't seen the 2016 closing ceremony I would look it up. The video showed a bit of Japans pop culture, showing anime characters, hello kitty, Nintendo's Mario, and PAC-Man. The video shows Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, arriving late to the Rio games and stuck in Tokyo. Though he finds a shortcut in the iconic green pipe in Super Mario Bros. He then shoots through the pipe as Mario and appears on the stage in a Rio on top of the pipe in the Mario hat for the closing ceremony. Shinzo Abe showed us how to do a closing ceremony for the Olympics in style. Making us eager and highly anticipating the opening ceremony that Japan will show us in 2020.
