I have waited to have a puppy to call my own for what seems like forever. I grew up with dogs and knew that one day I would have one to raise and call my own. Over this past weekend, a little 8 week old german shepherd/lab mix came into my life.
I became a volunteer at the Charleston Animal Society to be around all the animals. I always enjoyed walking the dogs and giving them love and attention, and I was just waiting for the right one to need a home. My two best friends and I are living in a sweet little house next year and are eager for the new additon to our college family. After talking about breeds for a long time, it came down to a shepherd. Although I had always wanted a Australian Shepherd, I had a big place in my heart for a rescue.
I had gotten back from getting some flowers, and began to scroll on my instagram feed where a picture of three sweet shepherd mix puppies came up. The animal shelter had just gotten a litter of six females in and they were going places that morning to be adopted out. I had a feeling they were all adopted, but got in the car and proceeded anyway.
I first called the pets smart and asked if any were left, and they proceeded to tell me no. Then I quickly dialed the Charleston Animal Soceity to ask about the other three, all who were adopted as well. At this point, I was almost to my car to leave. A few seconds after she told me they were all adopted out, she said wait just a second. One puppy was brought back. Unfortunately, someones dog at home was not to fond of the little one coming in. But, for me.. this was fate.
I began to tear up on the phone, saying I will be there in fifteen minutes, please don't give her to anyone else. I did not even know what she would look like. I called my two friends and said come downstairs, were going to pick up our puppy! Out of nowhere, they got ready and we were on our way. Kate began to look up dog names on the way there and thats when we chose the name Chloe.
We walked into the shelter as one of the workers was holding this sweet sleepy girl. We fell in love and I said, she has a home. That was it, she was mine. She is the sweetest dog I have known and has the best personality. I cannot wait to see her grow into a big girl!
For those who want a puppy, please consider a rescue. Whether you want a older dog or not, these shelter dogs need homes! Not only will the rescue, rescue you... but you will give he/shea home and love forever and honestly there is no better feeling.
