My Rescue Animal Ended Up Rescuing Me

And now I'm a cat lady.

My Rescue Animal Ended Up Rescuing Me

I never thought I would be a cat lady. I never thought I would have a PetCo rewards card (after so many points, Luna gets a free treat and two free treats on her birthday!). I never thought I would buy kitty treats at Peace, Love, and Little Donuts, at The Cupcakerie, and anywhere else that offers pet-friendly sweets. Every time I see a toy she might like, I buy it for her; and she has a lot of toys. She has filled my life with so much joy and I often find myself thinking about how boring my life would be if she wasn't part of it.

How Luna rescued me was a classic love story. She and 3 of her siblings were found in a box on the steps of a rafting company in Fayetteville, WV. A gentle, animal-loving woman found them and took them in. She cared for them for a couple weeks until she found homes for all of them. As fate would have it, at that exact same time, I was looking for a pet kitten. I wanted something warm and cute and soft to cuddle, to raise, to grow old(er) with. I put on Facebook what I wanted and that same afternoon was the first time I saw a picture of her. She was so tiny! She was still so tiny a week later when my Nonnie drove her from Fayetteville to Morgantown for me.

She was the fuzziest mess of a thing I had ever seen. Just a gray tuft of fur with whiskers, ears, bean toes, and the brightest yellow eyes. She was able to loaf in the palm of my hand. That night, I was terrified that I would roll over in bed and crush her! She has grown up a lot since then; her mane is sleek and shiny, her tail stands high and proud. She is a very skilled hunter, tracking down beetles and flies like a ninja.

She is adorable and funny and young and free-spirited. She loves to play with her toys but is somehow asleep 90% of the day. She is sassy and fierce and regal. She will cuddle you and nudge you one second and bite the webbing between your thumb and forefinger the next. She can sense when I'm sick and will lay beside me in bed all day. She can tell when I'm happy and she will meow back and forth with me. She is spoiled, but she is healthy. She is a sweetheart, but she is wild.

So, yeah. I'm a cat lady. A rescue mom.

Rescuing Luna was one of the best things I have ever done. Now I have a best friend, a companion, a snuggle bug, a Luna Tuna Boona Boat. A sweet little orphan kitten has a home and is surrounded by people that love her. If given the opportunity, I will definitely adopt another cat. I will also adopt a dog when I live in a place that has enough room for me to do so (a.k.a. a yard). There are so many helpless animals that are being abandoned every day, all they want is to be loved by a human and give that love back in return. The bond between me and my Luna is real, and it is because we saved each other.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
