Why I Want To Travel

even though New York will always be my home

Why I Want To Travel
Krista Cook

Some people travel to get away, some people travel for work, some people travel because they like their destination better than where they are- that is not my reason. I love to travel, but for the sake of seeing new and amazing places, to see as much as I can, and then come home. In the end, my favorite place in the world is New York, because that’s my beautiful, fantastic home. That being said, I don’t want to stay in one place forever, I’d feel like I was standing still.

I want to travel…

To go on an adventure

A new place brings an adventure with every unknown road, and it is certainly exciting to see something new. When you travel to a place with an eager, open mind ready to explore, there’s no telling what you can find, whether it’s hiking through a random trail, picking the name of a random unknown bakery, finding it and eating at it, taking an unexpected detour, you name it. It can be a big leap or a small one, but letting some adventure into your trip is what gives you the most amazing stories to tell…

To find the unimaginable

I heard a quote that goes something like this- you are only truly living as long as your reality is better than your dreams. Well, my dreams don’t just take place in one town, or one state, or even this one reality, so the best way to chase them and find wonder is to see the real, beautiful, wondrous places here on this earth. Whether you seek them out or find them by accident, these magic moments can be something out of your own imagination. Now that matches dreams, but how can reality be better?

To share the experience with friends

The people you’re with is what makes your life the way it is. The journey is only half as fun alone. I want to travel with friends who I can share the experience with and who will keep me smiling the entire way, through the rain, delayed planes, stalled cars, power-outs, you name it. People who you can travel across countries with are people you can travel through life with, because you know you can count on them even in a new, unexplored place, and they’re obviously ready for an adventure. And you never know who you’re going to meet on the way…

To meet new people along the way

There are so many different people and cultures in this world and not all of them are going to come to you- sometimes you have to go to them. It’s obviously not possible to meet every human being on the earth but it is certainly nice to meet an incredibly nice waiter in Italy who uses google translate to talk with you and your friends, and not just about the menu. You may never see these people again, or you may become the best of friends under very unusual circumstances, but they are certain to impact you just like the people you see in your hometown every day.

To know more

Along with the people, there are whole cultures that you may read about or have heard about, but have never experienced before. Architecture, natural wonders, man-made wonders, art, plays, machines, historical landmarks, springs, waterfalls, canyons, the list could go on. I don’t want to let an opportunity like that go by knowing that I could have seen at least some of these things in my life. To know how the Grand Canyon looks and feels during a sunrise, or what Niagara Falls looks like from a boat, being covered with the mist from the waterfalls is extraordinary. Seeing the northern lights, walking on a glacier, seeing a coral reef? Well, I’ll just have to find out.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
