Fullmetal Alchemist is, undoubtedly, the best anime of all time. It doesn't matter if you watched the 2003 anime or Brotherhood, both of them are remarkably fantastic animes with epic plots and a compelling cast of characters. With a 27-volume manga, two animes, two animated films, six novels, and 11 console games, fans were more than ecstatic to find out that there was going to be more content.
There was an announcement of a live action film coming out in 2017, with an all-Japanese cast and following the Brotherhood plot.
Quick Side Note: My only complaint with that is that the cast was written to be German, with the characters from Xing being Chinese and it's safe to say Ishvalans are Middle Eastern. I'm not complaining about an all Japanese cast by any means, because I think the diversity is wonderful, but if they wanted real diversity, they would have had so much more of it by sticking to how the characters were meant to be written. I'm not really upset about it, though; I just had to get that off my chest before I continued.
I followed closely along with whatever bit of news I could find, salvaging for any scrap materials I could work with to see how this movie was going to go. Right when I thought I had it figured out, thinking that it's probably going to end up being just another mediocre anime adaption film, I was given evidence to turn my outlook on the film completely around.
On November 16th, Warner Brothers Japan dropped a 35-second trailer.
It started with showing a typical transmutation, and already it made my heart absolutely flutter. The graphics already looked beautiful, and it was unique to see the changes made when adapting transmutations from animation to a live action scene. It was a different approach at how the transmutations were in the anime, which looked like this:
It was a lot more based around electricity, while the film's transmutation looks like it's more focused around the raw materials used in the process. The scenes then showed a train drive by, showing text with information about the film itself. By this point, I was already practically leaping out of my seat, but then the next scenes came and that's when I became the ultimate fangirl.
There's so much to talk about here! So much was shown in such a short amount of time! Let's start with what was shown first in the trailer: Edward Elric clapping his hands together and placing them on the ground, like he does in the anime when he's about to perform a transmutation. I can't picture a more perfect way of introducing the Fullmetal Alchemist himself. The costume had some changes from the anime, which is all just regular cloth except for his leather boots and leather pants. Now his trench coat is leather as well, and it honestly looks so beautiful! Needless to say, I know what's going on my Christmas List for 2017. The colors were muted slightly, adding a darker and realistic tone to the trailer, instead of focusing on vibrant colors and bright lighting.
The scene showed next was the transmutation circle in what appears to be Hohenheim's office, which is where Ed and Alphonse learned alchemy and attempted to commit human transmutation. However, that circle wasn't a Human Transmutation Circle, so it leads me to assume that this circle is for a sequence when Ed and Al were learning alchemy. The office looked as if was ripped straight from the anime, which showed me how closely they paid attention to detail. So far, I have a lot of high hopes for this movie. Then again, I had a lot of high hopes for the Attack on Titan movie, and we saw how well that turned out.
The last little clip shown was of rubble rushing to Edward, where he just watched for a few seconds before he started to shield himself from the debris. I'm not quite sure exactly what's going on here, but one thing is for certain: it's a fight. Almost all of the fights in the anime are extremely destructive, and it wouldn't surprise me that this would be following in line.
So far, I was waiting. I was waiting for Alphonse's reveal - because I knew it was going to be a big one. I already was holding in my squealing, keeping my happy shaking down to an absolute minimum. I was trying to contain myself as best as I could, and so far I was doing pretty good, but the next clip brought tears to my eyes.
There they are: the Elric brothers, in the flesh and armor. I'm still in shock that I'm typing this. There was a voice over, of Edward, saying "I promise I will get our bodies back." I somehow knew that they wouldn't show Alphonse completely, and from what I see, it looks scarily accurate. The brief movement was so fluid, so human-like, and it looked so real. Then Edward just walks up and rests his forehead on his brother's chest, and WB Japan might as well stab my own chest.
Let's talk about these two brothers for a moment:
These two are closer than me and all members of my family combined, if that puts things into perspective. These brothers only have each other - no mother, no father, no aunts or uncles or anybody else in their family. These two are all these boys have. Sure, they have family friends and members of the military they care about, but they aren't each other. Sacrificing a limb for a brother is something that not many can live up to - it's noble, and the bond is beautifully saddening.
Ugh, these brothers bring me so much pain and I love it.
After the 2017 date was revealed, I thought that the trailer was over, but WB Japan decided to surprise me with one last little clip before ending it altogether.
Now, this is new.
I don't remember anything like this from the anime, the closest that comes to mind is the Chimera that Ed fights when he's in Liore in the very beginning of the series. This might be the chimera, but there are many things to suggest otherwise.
The first and most obvious choice is that this thing is mechanical. There's no living thing on it, at least from what I can tell, and it's all metal instead of meat. The chimeras were animals fused together, and so it looked like an animal hybrid instead of something manufactured like this creature looks here. The next reason being is the location. During every incarnation with the Liore chimera fight, it took place underground indoors. Clearly, we are not underground nor are we indoors here. Now, I'm not ruling out that they may have moved the position, but if the filmmakers were able to get every detail on Hohenheim's desk properly ordered down to the last scattered piece of paper, then I don't think they just would blow off the Liore story arc by changing locations and animals to begin with.
This makes me think that this is a new thing that was in neither the anime nor in the manga. I'm curious, what direction are the filmmakers going to take with this adaption?
This little clip alone is making me question how accurately they're going to follow the main storyline, or if this is just one of only a couple new additions to enhance the plot. My only hope is that this doesn't turn out to be like the Attack on Titan movie, which turned out a lot worse than what I had hoped for.
Who am I kidding?
This movie could be utter garbage and I would still buy it on Blu-Ray because I'm just that kind of trash can for this anime. I love everything about Fullmetal Alchemist, both animes, the manga, the characters, the story, the music, everything. I and a few other Fullmetal Alchemist fans remained quiet about our obsession since it had grown out of popularity in the past couple years. I mean, we still draw fanart or write fanfiction or find whatever content out there that we can, but it wasn't the main fandom that was reblogged on Tumblr, to say the least.
But, once this trailer dropped, we all emerged from the garbage like zombies from a graveyard.
I'm not joking. Our fandom woke up just like that.
It was refreshing! I'm starting to see all sorts of new fanart and people are starting to get back into the swing of continuing fanfiction again (myself included). Fullmetal Alchemist became a mark on the map once again, reuniting veteran fandom members with newcomers that decided to watch the anime for the first time.
This teaser single-handedly brought the fandom back to life, and we will all have something to talk about until the real trailer emerges, then the real in-depth analysis begins.
I rest my case—the fandom remains alive, and we're getting an awesome-looking movie.
I can't wait for 2017.
