I grew up in Prince George's County, MD, a largely democratic county, in a largely democratic household. I was definitely sheltered and raised with a bias toward liberalism. Recently, I moved to a small town in Tennessee where they wear T-Shirts that say "Hillary for Prison" and T-shirts advocating for Trump to "Make America Great Again." For the life of me, I couldn't understand why everyone was in support of Trump, so I started asking questions, and getting into little political debates of my own to try to understand where they were coming from.
Here's the good news: Even the people who are in support of Trump will acknowledge that Trump isn't a great choice. They don't like Trump, but they hate Hillary.
A lot of the negative feelings Trump supporters have for Hillary stem from the two incidents we all know about. Benghazi, and the e-mails. They see Hillary as a liar. I've got news: Trump lies too. Many feel that this speaks to her moral character and they do not want a president with no value system. I still clueless as to what morals people see in Trump. Another big reason that many support Trump is because they are fearful of what Hillary will do while in office. Many see that Hillary may have the opportunity to nominate 3 new supreme court justices which will allow her to create a democratic supreme court. If this were to occur, it is feared that Hillary will overturn the Second Amendment and take away the right to bear arms (although Hillary did not mention plans to attempt to ban guns during her response on gun control in the debate), legalize 3rd trimester abortion, stifle the right to express Christianity, and overregulate everything. They see voting for Trump as a way to vote against Hillary.
Here's the better news: A lot of them acknowledge that Trump made an fool of himself at the first presidential debate so maybe there's hope.
Trump showed a lot of his true colors at the debate and many of his followers recognized that. He displayed his bad temperament (and even claimed that he had a better temperament than Hillary after shouting at her and interrupting her 52 times during the debate). He displayed how poor he is at handling interpersonal conflict which leads me to believe that foreign relations will go downhill significantly with Trump as president. He showed us that he doesn't care about preparing for debates and won't take the presidency seriously. And once again, he reminded America that he is a businessman and only a businessman. The one response he gave during the debate that was at least partially thought through was his response regarding how to stimulate the economy. He showed us that money is all he cares about with his admission that he took advantage of the law in order to not pay middle class workers for the services they provided him. If Trump's theatrical performance didn't show his supporters his true colors, then I don't know what will.
