To My Person

You remind me to live, something I forget to do sometimes.

To My Person

There’s never anyone quite like you, as hard as I try to look. You are incomparable to any other person I’ve ever met, which makes finding a “you” in college that much harder. If I had my way, I would pack you into my suitcase and bring you with me everywhere I go, but no matter how far away we are in distance it’s never in heart. I’m always cheering you on from the sideline, wishing you the best in whatever it is you’ve set out to do. I want you to know how proud I am of you, for being the most courageous, caring, kind-hearted soul I’ve ever met. I am eternally grateful for your love and support, and although I know I’ll never find another “you” in college, I’m at least grateful I have the real deal waiting for me when I come home.

The thing I love about you most is your kindness and the way you see the world. Your kindness is unlike any other person’s, and you always have the most positive outlook on life even during tough times. You are the sweetest, most genuine human I’ve ever known which is probably why we get along so well. Because much like myself, you care more about other people than you do yourself. Even when people don’t deserve your generosity, which happens 9 times out of 10, you always go the extra mile for people and especially for me. I’ll never be able to thank you for the countless laughs and random acts of kindness over the years. You always keep me on my toes with little surprises that keep me smiling for days. I strive to make you proud as a best friend and live up to your kindness because in my eyes it’s one of the most amazing qualities you have. Your love and concern for other people is truly what makes you unique in this world, and why I’m so proud to call you my best friend. You continually build people up, instead of tearing them down. Compliments are never a rarity with you, and you boost my self-esteem on the daily but it’s always in the most genuine manner. You compliment my soul and the person I am, and that’s so much deeper to me than superficial regards. Countless times, you never fail to remind people what they mean to you, and how grateful you are for them, which reminds me that I too have so much to be grateful for. Let me just say, that without you I would view the world entirely differently. You make me view life in a positive light, even when things aren’t going my way. You remind me to live, something I forget to do sometimes. I am continually reminded that no matter what, I am loved and supported by you; something other friends don’t always remember to do.

Having a friend that is as kind-hearted as you is a double-edged sword. It has made making college friends that much harder because you have set the bar so high that many others don’t even compare. I can’t count on a lot of people like I can count on you but in the end, that’s okay. In fact, that makes me appreciate our friendship even more, because it’s a rarity in today’s world. I told you one day I would write about you, and you told me not to worry about it, you were just happy I was doing something I loved. You didn't even want me to give you the credit that you rightfully deserve, but that doesn't surprise me. I'm just giving you a reminder that no matter what, no matter where, no matter how, I am always on your side. I am always going to be there for you and you can count on me. I’ll never be as good of a friend to you as you are to me, but I will strive everyday to come close. You are important, you are loved, you are my best friend and you are my person.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
