My Opinions About Modern-Day American Issues

A strong urge to rise above the negativity.

I really don’t like getting into politics, especially with friends who root for the opposite party as me. But as I see what people are saying about this election and about what is happening around the world, it really scares me thinking that these are the people who would put a candidate in office that would really destroy America. And I won’t say the names of the presidential candidates, I just want this article to shed some light on real life happenings occurring in our world right now and why we need to wake up and put a stop to it.

First topic of discussion, President Obama and his plan to “unite” people of different races. Hmm, that worked out so well…not. During the entirety of his term, I have not only seen our president consistently support the protesting and the hatred of blacks towards whites, but I have seen the race gap of this country become exceedingly larger. And there is no denying that.

So we go to the police force discussion. Police are under the radar at the moment for racial profiling, irresponsibly shooting and killing their suspects. I will not deny any of that, no one should deny that. The police involved should not only be stripped of their right to be a part of the law enforcement community, but they should serve time in jail and even get extensive trials on their cases to figure out the truth behind their motives. However, since this is not the case in many instances, the American people have become outraged. And in the midst of this outrage, we have created anarchy. Yes, anarchy. Blacks and whites (which by the way, shouldn’t even be called that, we are all Americans and should not be distinguished by the color of our skin), have become extremely hostile towards each other in many occurrences across this country.

Instead of punishing the few individuals who have committed murder out of cowardly fear, we have made it worldly public, we have fed into the idea that police are the bad guys. I really don’t understand why we cannot rise above that. Police are good people, they have dedicated their lives and took an oath to protect civilians under any circumstances. Is there bad police? We see it on the news every day. Are there also bad doctors, teachers, car manufacturers, judges, and lawyers? Yes!

I agree that the cops involved in these instances are at fault and deserve severe punishment. I see why the black community is outraged, I understand why it is upsetting. But instead of protesting and causing more chaos in our beautiful nation, maybe everyone should start vouching for real change. We need more education, more jobs, more people contributing to society. We can’t afford to have protesters blocking major highways, killing cops and causing more destruction. That is not changing, that is making things worse. Rise above the negative influences, rise above what you are against, rise above the terrible police who have taken beautiful lives away from this earth. Be the change you wish to see in the world and don’t feed into the negativity.

Our police force is under scrutiny, we have labeled them the scapegoat of all of our problems here in America. The community that has sworn to protect us under any circumstances, the people that we are supposed to trust with our lives, are now the enemy. This should not be the case. Remember, we have to keep in mind that countries (countries that hate America) are watching us and laughing as we destroy our own country from the inside out.

Again, I will not vouch for who I support and I will not sway anyone into making decisions. I am just an outsider who watches the news every day and likes to see what is going on with the world. From my own viewings and from my own thoughts, I’ve collected facts, made personal observations and have come to several conclusions. Of these conclusions, I really think it is evident that Western civilization is under attack. There is no doubting that. We have a candidate who is running who has accepted money from countries who want to see the destruction of America. That is a fact, it is kept in record. We have monsters who are trying to kill us off the earth, who hate people of a different sexual orientation, who cringe at the word “freedom,” who want to see all Americans in their death beds.

I really urge you guys to just turn on the news and see the destruction that is happening around us. Every week we have a new terrorist attack. Every week we see acts of hate and violence on the screens in our homes. We are sinking into the ground faster than we know, it’s time to wake up and see that if we can’t support our own country from the inside, then how do we expect others to respect us and see us as a powerful nation?

As much as I would have loved to make this as my status on Facebook, it’s clearly too long and I think it’s a good topic to bring out a healthy debate (without people yelling at me or calling me names). Instead of attacking and being on the defense 24/7, we need to exhibit strength and power. Be better than those who you disagree with. Be better than the scum we have on this planet. Be better than what people tell you. Listen to your own heart, your own mind, make your own decisions, absorb the facts and create an idea that fits your needs, but do not criticize and bash people for thinking differently. The number of times I have been called racist, scary or disgusting by my own friends is too much. And it’s sickening to me because I’m not any of those things. In fact, I’m the opposite. I want to see our country together, not divided. I want African Americans to rise above this and say, “Hey, we are better than this.” Because guess what? You are better than this.

Instead of protesting, causing more chaos and saying that the entire police force is at fault, try and stand up and say, “You know what? Those people involved in those murderous acts are crappy people, they deserve hell. But as a citizen of this country and as an American, I will not let it affect me, I will prove to this nation what I have to offer. I will dedicate myself and become an asset to this country. I will love my neighbor, I will not look at the color of his skin and I will not ask him what his religion is. I value people based on what is inside, their character is more important.”

Change starts with you, it’s a chain reaction. As a nation, we are doing nothing but proving to others that we hate this country just as much as every other country hates America. This not only makes us look weak but is putting us at risk for even more horrific mass killings. I really am scared, I will not even deny the fact that I get nervous when I look at the news and see what is happening to the world. Because we aren’t doing anything. We sit back and silently destroy ourselves from the inside and say, “Oh, things aren’t so bad, let’s just strip citizens of their arms and let millions of people into this country where we don’t know what their true motives are.” Yeah, that really makes sense.

I encourage everyone who read this article, to use the comments below to either agree with me or promote a healthy debate.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
