Thanks to the plethora of social websites in today's society, news is all around us. I'll bet that every one of our Facebook news feeds has something about Donald Trump saying something stupid or something about Hillary's email scandal. With less than 3 months until the presidential election, I understand that it's that time of year when the Democrats and the Republicans slander each other using every form of media that they can. For example, the main article on the Fox News website, a predominantly conservative website, is another article emphasizing the Clinton Email scandal, while the Washington Post has 5 different articles spotlighting and questioning Donald Trump’s erratic statements and ideas.
In times like these, I find solace in what is probably my favorite website: Reddit. Reddit is not only the best way to find unbiased news, but it’s also a place that fosters discussion on a multitude of topics. For those of you that don’t know what Reddit is, I’ll enlighten you. Reddit is the front page of the internet, comprised of different subreddits that contain links and discussion posts that pertain to certain topics. Each user has the option to subscribe to the different subreddits that interest them, which gives them their personalized front page. For example, I personally like to follow cricket and ultimate frisbee so I subscribe to those subreddits, which are referred to as r/ultimate and r/cricket. Whenever I open my Reddit app on my phone or my laptop, I get links to different discussions and articles that pertain to cricket and ultimate frisbee.
Aside from following obscure sports, I also enjoy following news and politics so I’m also a subscriber to r/news and r/politics. The best part about this is that every subreddit is closely moderated by people that genuinely care about the content posted so they will remove anything that is off topic or against the subreddits rules, which really nurtures the discussion that ensues. Make no mistake, this subreddit still has news about Donald Trump doing Donald Trump things but, it also has links to articles on how Sanders is for the ending of private prisons, Libertarian Gary Johnson’s views on the Republican Party, and how a liberal supreme court can affect America.
In a time when the news is skewed and you read things that are irrelevant to you interests and concerns, Reddit gives you the news YOU want. Updates on NASA? r/space has you covered. Want to understand something complicated but can’t understand the terminology? r/explainlikeimfive has you covered. Do you not care about the news or the world at all and just want to see pictures of cats? r/cats has you covered. Read what you want read, not what others want to shove down your throat.
