This Saturday I spent the evening watching a confident, blunt, and hilarious redhead comedian named Kathy Griffin. And by Kathy Griffin, I mean the Kathy Griffin: the two-time Emmy and Grammy winner.
While I had not followed the TV series Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List closely I knew this was a show I could not miss. And I was right.
Before she even took hold of the microphone, Kathy Griffin rocked it. She didn't just walk on stage for her entrance but instead danced across it to the crowds' cheers. Throughout the evening, Kathy continued to make the crowd roar by sharing bits of her life experience as well as encounters with the famous.
She even had a few stories featuring the one and only Donald Trump!
Kathy Griffin touched on both the topics of sexism and ageism in her performance. Growing up, I have encountered the notion that women are just not as hilarious as their male counterparts. Thanks to the internet, I have witnessed how female comedians, in particular, have a lot of pressure placed on each performance. It's sad but true that if one female act goes poorly, some small-minded people use the moment as an opportunity to say, "Women aren't funny." What's even more alarming is how many people agree.
How unfair is it for anyone to have to perform under the pressure of representing a whole gender?
Kathy Griffin also brought up not only the difficulties in working in a male-dominated field but also the challenges of ageism. At age fifty-five, Griffin is still calling herself a slut and not letting her age define or limit her.
Overall, I enjoyed myself watching Kathy Griffin perform. Kathy Griffin personalized her act for Arcata which I thought was really cool! The woman in front of me was often in a fit of giggles, and I found myself feeling happier just watching someone else be so happy.
Humboldt State University has an amazing line up of performances for the year. I highly suggest for all students to attend at least one because I promise it will be something you won't regret!
