My New York City Summer

The city that changed my life

The two greatest cities in the Country (maybe even the world) are Los Angeles and New York City. This is not an opinion. This is a proven fact. I have been lucky enough to have lived in both of these amazing places and have even called them home. I have lived in Los Angeles for the past twenty years of my life, however after living in New York for less than two weeks, I fell in love.

New York has a way of overworking you and exhausting you every single day. Everyone is so motivated, hard working, and competitive. But this mentality pushes you to perform at your best and motivates you to be better.

I fell in love with New York city in a matter of days. The food, the buildings, the fast pace, and most importantly the people. Yes living on an island with over 8 million people can seem crowded and annoying to say the least, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. From the East Village "wookies" living on the street, to the Dunkin' Donuts guy who would greet me everyday on my way to work, to the bouncer at Niagra. While living here I met amazing people and made friendships with whom I would have never known if not for this amazing city.

Being able to meet new people every day and hear each and every one of their incredible stories was truly incredible. From the old Ukrainian man down the street who told me stories over pizza of what it was like when he moved to East Village fifty years ago, to the Irish boy selling Irish whisky who moved here to find a better life. New York city made me even more proud to be an American and share this city with those who were not born here, those who enrich this beautiful city and leave their own unique mark.

Thank you New York. Thank you for motivating me, inspiring me, and changing me. I will miss the constant dripping of Air conditioning units while walking to work, the smells of Saint Marks place, and the bodegas. I will miss Crif Dogs, the N,Q,R subway and living down the street from the birthplace of Punk Rock. For now I will just relive my many quintessential New York moments and I will count down the days until we are reunited.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
