My Music Taste Journey

It's always evolving.

My Music Taste Journey
Happy On

I had always grown up on an interesting musical upbringing. My parents would always blast one of three things: classic rock, new wave, or even heavy metal. Artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Fleetwood Mac, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, and Slayer would blast through the speakers of my car growing up. Due to this very interesting and odd combination of music, I have always been interested in many different genres.

I had always listened to either my parents' stuff or even just what played on the radio until I got to the end of my middle school. Then I was depressed! Just kidding, kind of. But the music I listened to went a whole different route. I started to listen to a lot of alternative music and grunge music. The 90s were a huge influence on my taste, and bands like Nirvana, Sublime, blink-182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Foo Fighters became my new obsession. Nirvana became one of my favorite bands though, and it still is. I was obsessed with everything Kurt Cobain and thought everything about his life was so intriguing.

Then, I had a bit of a transformation the summer going into high school. Here I was introduced to more modern music, and a whole new genre! Alternative/Indie music became my main go-to. Bands such as Mumford and Sons, The 1975, Clairo, Cage the Elephant, Mac DeMarco, Still Woozy, Tame Impala, and Arctic Monkeys became my thing. I still am a huge fan of all of them today! Discovering these artists really sparked my musical interest. I started to be able to find music on my own, and find out what I liked and what I disliked. I was very open when it came to new things to try out.

Here comes one of my biggest genre crossovers and what has full made me into the music lover I am today. Senior year of high school, I started to get into my all-time favorite genre of music: R&B music. This genre has contributed to a lot of my music taste today, and artists such as Daniel Caesar, Joji, BROCKHAMPTON, SZA, Frank Ocean, Steve Lacey, and Brent Faiyaz all became my new obsessions. This genre is what I listen to now, and I really dig it. The lyrics are meaningful, and the beats are perfect to just vibe out. It's a mix between slow stuff, and more fast-paced type beats.

I still listen to all of these artists today, and go back and forth between moods as to who I listen to most. I think being exposed to so many genres really helped me open my mind up, and understand different types of people, and even different types of personalities. I'm so grateful to have come across so many amazing artists, and can't wait to see what the future of music holds.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
