Dear Mom and Dad

For all the times that I don't express my feelings for them.

Dear Mom and Dad,

For some reason, I have never been the type to go around and shout out how much I care about you two. I may say I love you every once awhile (when I leave or when we are about to hang up the phone). Although, to me, the three famous words are not enough. They don’t truly express how much care and love I have towards you guys. So here are 12 reasons I would never wish for anyone else to guide me through life.

1. These past few years have been anything but easy for us, but you still call me everyday to ask what I am doing and/or how I am doing.

2. Even though I have disappointed you over a million times, you still always seem to tell me all the things that I have accomplished and that have made you proud.

3. No matter how many times I have lost your trust, you always have the expectation that I will gain in back, You always still believe and have faith that I will stop lying to you.

4. All the advice you continue to give me when you know that I don’t take it, never stops you from throwing it my way.

5. Being there for me through all my break ups, even when you know I rush into them too quickly.

6. Spending every dime in the world to keep me doing what I love to do.

7. Spending full days sitting court-side, cheering me on, making me feel more and more confident when I needed it the most.

8. Even after I moved out, you keep your house open to me whenever I need you (or food).

9. Spreading the love through all your kids evenly.

10. Laughing at my jokes, even if they aren't funny.

11. Getting me into a school that practically saved my education.

12. I know that through all the friends and boyfriends that I go through, you two will always be my go-to people.

13. You are my best friends.

14. Thank you for protecting me from all the bad in the world.

I cannot thank you two enough for everything you do for me, And I am sorry that I don't express how I really feel. You both know that is not really who I am. All I can say is I love you two more than anything. I could not imagine my life with any other parents. You two get me and make me feel like the most special person in your lives. Thank you for bettering my life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
