On Monday, September 26, the first of the three presidential debates went underway.
Lester Holt, an NBC journalist, was the moderator for this debate and led this event in three main topics of discussion: Achieving Prosperity, Race in America and National Security.
Starting off with achieving prosperity in America, Hillary Clinton focused on her tax plan. She brought us back to eight years ago when Obama took office and how 9 million jobs were lost and 5 million people lost their homes. She complimented how far we have come and the improvements that we have made, and wanted to stress that instead of going back to the former policies that got us into the Great Recession in the first place, she will build with what has made this economy prosper.
Trump, on the other hand, implied that he wants to 180 the current tax plan that is being implemented today. He is looking to make a “trickle down” economy, which means he will slash the taxes of the wealthy and by doing so, will allegedly grow the economy.
Clinton responded that the “trickle down” economy will not work — which if we are looking at history, is completely true.
Instead, Clinton wants to build the middle class and invest in the working class people. She also wants to implement a debt-free college plan so more young men and women who have less financial ability to afford college tuition are able to get the education they need to be successful.
This discussion brought up the heated topic of Trump’s refusal of releasing his tax audits. He pleaded that he has nothing to hide and will only release them once Hillary releases the 30,000 plus emails.
I need to mention that the “email-gate” is simply blown out of proportion and that if you take the time to do the research you will find that she had printed out every email so there would be a hard copy on file- the safest way to hold onto an email.
I also need to call out the absurdity of the fact that although Trump will not release his tax forms, he proudly released his levels of testosterone. Something I don’t think anyone in America was ever concerned with, might I add.
Holt then changed the topic of conversation to race in America shortly after, first asking Clinton on how she plans on changing policies to demolish the racism that is very apparent here in the 21st century.
Clinton started out agreeing that racism is very much alive and has too much of a hand in people’s placements in the workforce and in society, and how it is the biggest factor in how some are treated. Her plan is to restore trust between communities and the police force and make sure that the police officers go through reformed training. She also deduced that her criminal justice reform policy is built on the platform of gun control and second chance programs.
In regards to race, Clinton paints Trump as someone with racist tendencies and informs us of his negative outlook on black communities.
Trump responded by stating his plan to stop the racial wars here in America, which as he plainly stated is law and order. Although he avoided answering the question of what his actual policies are on crime prevention and the justice system, he does in fact state how he agrees with Clinton on the fact that there need to be stricter background checks before someone can get their hands on a gun.
Holt leads us to the final question of national security and turns to Clinton to start the discussion. Clinton begins with how nowadays, one of the biggest threats to national security are the cyber attacks happening internationally. She uses Russia as a clear example of how they are overstepping bounds and threatening our security. She also states that the fact that Trump encouraged Russia to go ahead and hack into the DNC, which was clear evidence that Trump is unfit to be the leader of this country.
Trump retorts by claiming that we do not know if it was really Russia who hacked into the DNC but does not give an explanation of why he had provoked Russia in the first place. He then blames Clinton and Obama solely for the formation of ISIS and says that she tells the enemy [ISIS] everything she plans on doing on her website and then goes ahead and says that Clinton has been fighting ISIS her entire life- which is false and literally impossible.
The only other thing that both Trump and Clinton were able to agree on was the fact that nuclear weapons are the number one threat to our national security.
In the final points of discussion, Lester baits Trump in quoting him saying, “Clinton doesn't have the look to be President”. Trump never answers this and lies that he only said that she didn't have the stamina for the Presidency.
Clinton counters with saying that he has the values of a man who should never hold office. She goes on by reiterating how many times he has been offensive to women, calling them pigs, slobs and dogs. Although Trump shook his head, he did admit he called Rosie O’Donnell those names and that she deserved it. I don't know how he thinks if it is just O’Donnell then it is fine, but it doesn't make it any less offensive or infuriating.
In their concluding remarks, Clinton said that she is focused on the American families and our future as a nation. She wrapped up by saying that she believes in the American democratic system and will support either outcome this coming November.
Trump closed by stating his infamous slogan; that he wants to, “Make America great again.” He goes on to babble about anything but his plans and policies, but in the last second, he finally answers Holt’s question that he will, “support Hillary if she wins.”
The clear winner of the debate was Clinton, and some can even see it as a shutout. She was prepared and poised, never once seeming agitated.
Trump, on the other hand, came out strong and forceful in the beginning. He was successful in the first half by making clear that he wants change. Although I disagree with every little thing he stands for, I admit that he made it clear he wants to get rid of the plans that are in place — which is more than he ever has admitted.
By the 50-minute mark, though, Trump lost his steam. It was apparent that he was fatigued, ill-informed and unprepared. He also never stopped fidgeting and interrupting Clinton every chance he had, which made him seem aggressive and pettish. He took every bait that Clinton threw at him, and made him seem more and more incompetent. It also showed his hypocrisy by saying that Clinton does not have the stamina, but then fails to stand still and keep his composure for a whole 90 minutes.
As said before, Clinton was the clear victor. And in the whole 90 minutes, she kept her composure, even with the babbling baboon to her right.
Unfortunately, this win might not have any dramatic swing in the polls, at least not for right now.
Because although Clinton helped herself, Trump didn't really hurt himself, even with his disastrous, child-like performance. His followers are pretty locked in as his supporters and Clinton's opposers.
This means that although Trump’s numbers might go down a point or two, there will not be a clear shift until the next two debates come to fruition.
Until next time folks, for more shining triumphs from my girl Hillary and more catastrophic implosions from Trump himself.
