My Journey Finding The Now

The past and future are intriguing, but why can't we focus on everything right in front of us?

In a society and generation that is as busy as this one, it is so extremely easy to get caught up in the past or the future and forget about the existence of the present. I am majorly guilty of this mindset that plagues us from our own happiness. Whether it is worrying about a social interaction I had, a test I took, or something that happened that is over and done, I am always overthinking my past and how it will impact my future. Moreover, my focus on the future is so extremely strong sometimes that I really think that what I wear will change the opportunities given to me and the outcome of my life as a whole. This anxiety, worry, and moving farther from the present is something that not only plagues me, my life, and my happiness but also detriments the lives of everyone around me.

Throughout my journey of self-discovery and conscious awareness, I have learned some things about being present through reading, experience, and, self-discovery. However, I know that this struggle to stay in the moment is far from over for me and everyone around me. No matter how much we try, it is really hard not to worry about our past and future and take what is right in front of us for granted. It almost feels as if we are bred and trained to focus on what is next instead of right where we are now. Whether that is saying you can't wait for a new school, a new job, a new city, a new hobby, a better friend, etc. It is almost innate for us to disregard what is right in front of our eyes and worry about how we get to the next best thing.

Well, the solution to this is you know just... be present. However, this is so hard and I truly believe that if we could just do that, it would be so easy to achieve happiness. While this solution is hard, it takes practice. Something I like to do when I find myself going through the motions of every day and just waiting for the future to come is take the time to show gratitude to what I have in this present moment, now. I think about how grateful I am for having the opportunity to find myself in this new place at this important and exciting time, meeting so many new people with unique experiences every day, and how I am so extremely lucky that I have one of the strongest support systems and people in the world.

Even big picture stuff is hard sometimes, so I like to show gratitude for the fact that I get to wake up and breath healthily every day, I get to see the earth and how beautiful it is and I have the power to influence people's lives. While this article was essentially a "brain dump" and allowed me to get things off my mind, it is so extremely important for us to remember to live in the moment and exist in this space.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
