I could complain about politicians for hours on end, but I won’t put you all through that. However, I am going to discuss a major problem I have with a majority of politicians today: they base their stances off of what will get them in office in the future.
It should be extremely apparent that I am a devout liberal, but this issue falls on the left side as well. I was not the biggest Hilary Clinton fan because she had switched stances on issues like the Trans-Pacific Partnership and gay marriage. However, she was a great, well-qualified, presidential nominee, and she earned my vote, but I am simply pointing out that this issue falls just as much on the left as it does the right.
This issue became most apparent to me with Trump’s nominee for secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Ben Carson. Ben Carson, who has no experience in urban development, let alone in any government whatsoever. Who Trump spent the greater part of the primaries humiliating, and pointing out how unqualified he was for government. But, now, he has earned his role in Trump’s cabinet, and as for all of the things Carson complained about with Trump earlier on? Out the window as well. Maybe it’s my morals, but I do not see how you can go from viciously differentiating yourself from somebody, to agreeing that you would be a good fit for their team a few months later.
In my opinion, politicians get into politics and change their stance on issues not because they feel a certain way about them, but because they want to get nominated. Don’t believe me? Look at the things Trump preached during the primaries, and even what he said during debates against Hilary. He’s not even in office yet, and he has gone back on numerous “promises.”
It seems morals have gone out the window in politics, and I hope they return some day soon.
