I take pride in being a writer. I am creative, imaginative, or someone who enjoys entertaining people with stories whether they are fictional or a memory that happened in my life. This is just the start of the reason that lead me to pursuing screenwriting as a dream career. Over the past several months, I have learned many things about screenwriting that I originally would have never thought of, and to say the least, this education has furthered my passion in doing what I dream of doing: telling mt stories to the world.
Without the money to pay for film school, learning how to be a screenwriter has required self-education rather than being in front of a teacher in a classroom. Since then, I have dedicated some of my time to reading a book titled Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by the late Syd Field. The book is an interesting read and has helped acquire knowledge on what it takes to write a good script, and I have to say, it has so far shed plenty of light on some of the problems I have faced when I first started to write a script of my own.
Screenwriting is a complex process that requires more than just simply thinking outside the box and coming up with a story. Finding a good story to write about can be a tricky and at times frustrating process. Sometimes, you have to let the story find you -- a good word of advice I learned upon reading the book. Many will tell you that the stories they are write are based on their own experiences, or perhaps their beliefs and views of the world around you. To be honest, I couldn't agree more. The stories you come up with are stories you may not realize are in one way or another to reflection of you.
I further my education by attending a virtual screenwriting seminar which I got to chat with writers including Meg LeFauve, the writer of Pixar's Inside Out, Alan Yang, the writer and producer of Parks and Recreation, and Max Borenstein, the writer of big-budget blockbusters such as Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and last year's Godzilla: King of Monsters. It was a very rewarding experience, and the things they had to say were quite thoughtful. It made me realize how challenging writing a script can be but ultimately how rewarding it is when you find your footing.
No doubt will landing a gig as a screenwriter be challenging but it is a challenge I am willing to take what matter how long it takes or how competitive things get, and I believe it will be serious competition.
