My Hero Is My Mom, Mama Jones

Everyone needs their “person”, someone with whom you can reveal your deepest secrets and desires without fear or judgement. They are there for you through thick and thin, through the bad days and the good. Most girls my age cite their best friend as their person, but my person is my mom, Mama J.

It is her birthday this week and as part of her present, I wanted to dedicate this article to my hero. Although there are no words that can be strung together to form an accurate appreciation for all that you have done for me, I’ll try to do my best.

To Mama J:

It takes a special kind of person to do the things that you do. Throughout the years, your resilience, strength, and kindness were always at the forefront of everything you did. I don’t know any other mom who can rock a side part/ faux hawk like you can (even though you like your pixie cut better). You are the kind of mom other moms wish they could be.

Growing up, I was so lucky to have such a positive role model in my life. You make me laugh and you build me back up when I fall. The time we spend together is irreplaceable and priceless; from long car rides to honors ceremonies, I wouldn’t trade a moment for the world. You’ve never missed one game, school play, or ceremony. When I see your face in the front row in the audience or hear your loud whistle from the stands, I know that I can conquer anything because you are there cheering me on.

Anyone who knows you, knows that you are a force to be reckoned with. Not only can you wake up at 4 am to go lift an insane amount of weight you also make it back in time to take me to school on time. On the off chance anyone dares to cross you, you also have the ability to leave them shaking in their shoes.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You never hesitate when I tell you I absolutely need to go to the craft store at 11 pm, bake seven dozen cookies, or that I need a ride home from a speech tournament at 1 am. It’s what makes you Mama J. Thank you for the free coffee Mondays, trips to Robinson Mall, the car ride karaoke, and being my #1 fan. I am so proud to be your daughter.

I often joke that you are not only my mom but you are also my personal shopper, my manager, my agent, personal photographer, pageant coach, chauffeur, hair stylist, shoulder to lean on along with countless other roles you have played for me. Thank you for telling me that I am invincible and to reach for the stars. You deserve your own crown. I love you.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
