An Open Letter to My Guy Best Friend

Well kid, we made to college…and let me tell you, I truly don’t know how I would be here without you. You’ve seen me through it all and somehow you’re still around. So here’s to our one in a million friendship and one hell of a guy.

Honestly, there are endless moments I need to thank you for, reasons every girl deserves a gem like you. So here are just a few…

1. Thank you for never starting drama in my life. For being the one person that I can tell anything too, and I mean ANYTHING

2. Thank you for letting me cry to you, whenever, no matter how ugly…

3. Thank you for your honest opinion, and for never sugar-coating it

4. Thank you for always listening and giving your endless advice

5. …And for comforting me after I don’t take that advice, followed with the “I told you so…”

6. Thank you for accepting me in every state, no matter what I look like

7. Thank you for making me feel more comfortable around you than almost anyone else in my life

8. Thank you for letting me annoy you when I feel the constant need for attention

9. Thank you for dropping whatever you are doing to hang out with me because I can only go so long without seeing you

10. Thank you for actually letting me watch movies and for always letting me pick the cheesy stuff

11. Thank you for laughing at how single we are while watching chick flicks

12. Thank you for sharing a million embarrassing moments with me, and still loving me even after you have to question our friendship

13. Thank you for your tough love, for putting me back on track after my rough patches

14. Thank you for keeping me grounded, and taking care of my broken pieces when life gets to be too much

15. Thank you for making me laugh when I thought a smile was impossible

16. Thank you for never giving up on me, even though I am a total pain in your ass

17. Thank you for opening doors for me when others were slammed in my face

18. Thank you for protecting me, for always having my back

19. Thank you for reminding me that I am worth so much more than the guy before

20. Thank you for showing me what love is, without the weirdness

So here we are, and I can without a doubt say that l am so lucky to have you in my life every day. Not once have you let me down and to know you’re in it for the long haul gives me comfort beyond words. You never fail to make me feel amazing. Our friendship is simply a hot mess and I know you wouldn’t want it any other way, because that is who we are. I wouldn’t dream of changing a thing.

So if I haven’t told you lately, thank you. Thank you for keeping me sane, and for showing me that life is better with a best friend by your side. Thank you for taking every step with me, and for making me a better and stronger person. Thank you for being you and in turn for shaping me.

Your Forever Grateful Best Friend

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
