My Grandma Will Always Be My Best Friend, And What A Blessing That Is

Having a grandma is a privilege in itself, but having a Grandma who loves you despite your failures and mistakes is a blessing in disguise.

My Grandma Will Always Be My Best Friend, And What A Blessing That Is
Victoria Stancy

When I was born I only had one full set of grandparents in my life but they will always be the greatest gift I have ever been given to have in my life.

Every day after grammar school, their house was my second home to work on homework, hang out with friends in their neighborhood and have a safe place outside of my own household. Growing up, I definitely was a stubborn child who would sometimes give my grandparents a hard time when it came to wanting to work on my homework or begging them to let me hang out with my friends when I still had assignments to work on or tests to study for.

My grandma was strict when it came to being inside her house at a certain time which for us was when the street lights came on. She always told me to act my age and not my shoe size which will always be my favorite saying of hers. She instilled in me that if I wanted friends and for someone to love me someday, I would need to treat others the way I want to be treated.

I wish I could take back all of the times I have ever been stubborn or mean in any way towards my grandma because she is truly an angel in disguise.

She showed up to all of my sporting events in grammar school and high school, my musicals, band concerts, drove me to my first job when I didn't have my license and was always willing to pick me up from school when I didn't feel good. I love that she is always a phone call away when I want to vent to her about the stresses of being away at school, missing her and my Papa, or just wanting to hear her voice. I hope that when I am a grandma someday, I am at least half the woman that she is. Whenever she goes to church, she never fails to remind me of how much she prays for me and lights a candle for me whenever she can.

My grandma is the person I can always count on to calm me down when I feel like giving up on myself.

Last semester, I was going through a really tough time within the first month and half of school and she let me drive to Chicago to spend the weekend at her house to relax and decompress even if all I did was slept and watch Netflix in my aunt's old room. She'll always have one of my favorite meal ingredients on hand when I stop over after work or come home for a school break. My grandma is the reason I have made it this far in my life because she has always been my personal cheerleader.

When I have zero motivation or faith in myself, she'll always be there to build me up. She is also the reason I have such great music taste even though my parents and siblings might beg to differ! Every Sunday morning she would wake up, make breakfast and get right to cleaning with the Jersey Boys soundtrack playing in the kitchen.

I will always cherish every single memory I have ever made with my grandma. I love you so much gram!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
