An Open Letter To My Future Roommate
Maria Foster

To my future roommate,

First of all, I'd like to thank you in advance. Thank you for choosing to live with me. I really couldn't imagine life in a single. I think it'd be close to solitary confinement. I'd have no one to get midnight pizza with. Thank you for letting me tell you all one thousand DIY projects that I'm going to attempt to create for our room. Thank you for being an awesome friend.

I know we're not THAT close right now, but I have a feeling that we're going to become pretty good friends. I can't wait until move in day!

I'm really glad to have found a roommate who I know I can trust. You know, someone who will tell me if my bronzer makes me look like an Oompa Loompa. Someone who won't judge me when I eat an entire pint of Ben & Jerry's. Someone who will tell me that, yes, those jeans do make my butt look big. I'm also really glad to have found a roommate who I know is a genuinely kind person. I couldn't have gotten luckier to have found you.

And of course, there are some things I want to tell you.

I promise that I won't steal your ice cream or Mac 'n' Cheese. I promise that I won't play loud music while you're trying to study. I promise that I'll do my best to take care of you when you're sick. And if you're ever sad, you can always have my shoulder to cry on. I want you to know that if you had a bad day and you just want to have a movie night and order pizza, I'll be there. If you have no one to eat with at lunch, dinner or even breakfast before your early class (although let's be real, it'll probably be me that has this problem), I'll be there. If you ever need somebody to go to the library or Starbucks or anywhere, I'd be glad to go with you! If you ever get asked out on a date, I'd be honored if you use me as an excuse. You know an "I'm sorry I promised my roommate I would go to Chipotle that night... And the next night. Oh and the night after that. Sorry" excuse. I'll do my very best to always have your back.

Most importantly, I want you to know that you can trust me and I'll be here for you. If you confide in me, I promise I won't spread it around. I promise I'm not a roommate that will steal your clothes or food. I promise I won't hog the entire fridge and I will always help to keep our room clean.

I want you to know that you can talk to me. If I do something that upsets you, I want you to tell me. I promise that I won't get offended or make our living situation awkward. And I promise to be honest with you, too.

I'm so glad we've decided to room together and I'm beyond excited for all of our future late night snack runs and movie nights and talks. And maybe the occasional dance party study break. I think we're going to get along very well.

Love,

Your future roomie

P.S. We're definitely going to have the cutest, most Tumblr, most Pinterest room in the whole building.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
