To My Freshman Year Roommate

Thank you for everything.

Dear Roomie,

I want to start off by saying thank you. College was definitely a tough adjustment for me to say the least. It’s the first time I was away from home for a long period of time. I am so thankful that I had you to help me get adjusted to being at school.

Thank you for always eating with me.

I remember on the first day of school when we went to the dining hall together, and ever, since we've always eaten together. I’ll miss our dining hall talks next year when we always caught up on everything that happened that day.

Thank you constantly letting me borrow your clothes.

I get bored of my clothes quickly, and you have the cutest wardrobe. I’m glad that you always let me borrow things from it. P.S. I promise I’ll return that shirt I borrowed from you months ago.

Thank you for always listening to me.

Whether I had a good day or a bad day, it’s nice coming back to our dorm and knowing you’re ready to hear every detail of it. You listen to me rant about the same things all the time, yet you never complain. You always know exactly what to say to cheer me up.

Thank you for always being there for me through my weekly mental breakdowns.

No matter what type of problem I’m having, you’re always there for me. Thank you for calming me down after I received my first bio exam grade and for picking me back up any time something went wrong.

Thank you for opening up to me, and letting me do the same to you.

We know everything about each other and I’d like to think that’s what makes us so close. I’ll always be here for you no matter what.

Thank you for being my college mom.

You’re always helping me make good decisions. Thank you for always making sure I was up for my 8 a.m. class first semester. And thank you for convincing me it’s a bad idea to go to a party when I had a paper due the next day.

Thank you for answering all my questions.

Whether they’re important or insignificant, you always answer them without hesitation. Thank you for telling me when my outfit looks good, or when I should probably change. You’re one of the most honest people I’ve ever met, and I’m grateful for that.

Thank you for being my best friend.

You were my first friend I met at college and still continue to be one of the most important people I’ve met. I know we sometimes get on each other’s nerves, but when you live with someone in the same room for that long, it’s bound to happen. Thank you for always supporting me and being there for me.

As freshman year comes to a close, I think about how thankful I am to have you as my roommate. Thank you for answering my Facebook message last year and choosing to live with me. I couldn’t imagine my freshman year without you. Thank you for not only being my roommate, but for also becoming my best friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
