Ending Off My First Semester at Penn State

It's been an interesting three months in Happy Valley, but in the best way possible.

I remember starting off this semester so scared. Scared of making new friends, being away from home from the first time, getting good grades...everything a college freshman normally worries about. While some of those feelings can still come out in the future, I like to think that I got past the worst of it.

Classes being online weren't the best, but they allowed me to hone in on my goals and put my effort to the test. I wound up having two in-person classes which made me super lucky and I looked forward to them every week. Unfortunately, next semester is most likely going to be very similar, so I'll have to hold on a little longer until I can get back to a semi-normal class schedule.

Making friends was so weird the first few weeks. It's like I didn't remember how to do it! Every lunch meet-up or coffee break felt so forced a lot of the time. As the semester went on, I'm happy to say that I have gotten more outgoing, which is a huge step for me. It has taught me to just let loose. As simple as it may seem, not everything in life has to be so structured all of the time. It's better to just make the most of the situations given to you. You can't control everything that happens, let your group of friends form over time, it doesn't always have to be the first people that you meet.

Our football season hasn't gone off to the best start to say the least. I'm sure that it is just because of the weird season and next year we'll be back to being a top 10 team (at least that's what I keep telling myself), but for now welcome to Penn State the basketball school!

I questioned if coming to campus was going to be worth it this semester, with how difficult it started out. Now that I can see everything went, I couldn't be happier that I did choose to come. It is something that I'll definitely never forget. Even when things shift back to normal and hopefully we'll be celebrating some Penn State Football wins, I'll definitely remember how everything started off here for me. With that being said, I'll see you in 2 months Happy Valley. I can't wait to see what the spring semester will bring.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
