I woke up on the morning of August 25th feeling nervous, excited, and unsure of how my experience would be at my first pride festival since coming out as bisexual (at the time - now I am homoflexible). I cleaned the kitchen for a family function taken place later on that day and got dressed for the festival: a shirt I ordered online, shorts, and sneakers that matched my shirt.
I got myself a Lyft to get me to the festival faster than standing outside and waiting for a bus. After I arrived, I walked around to see the vendors, and what was being sold. After walking around twice, I bought a bisexual flag to tie around my neck, won two free tickets for an event, and began walking around some more.
Occasionally, I bought a drink or two and received some compliments on my shirt. It made me feel good and happy to be accepted by heartwarming people who are not afraid to be themselves.
Before I left, I met a new friend who is from my hometown, and currently lives in Florida. She was very sweet, and an amazing person to meet. We friended each other on Facebook and agreed to keep in touch and hang out whenever she returned to my hometown.
This was the first pride festival I ever attended, and it felt so good to be myself around people who don't care about other people think. I most definitely want to attend the pride festival in my hometown and in New York City next year.
Here is a quote that fits me best for that day and every day:
"I've been embraced by a new community. That's what happens when you're finally honest about who you are; you find others like you."--Chaz Bono
