It's finally here. Nintendo handheld and console hybrid; the Nintendo Switch. It feels so long ago that this was announced and the date rushed to meet the world. To me, it almost feels like its not time but here we are and I got one myself. I got extremely lucky with pre-orders and found one at Wal-Mart after hunting around the world and the universe. So I waited and March 2nd finally arrived. I had already planned on going to the midnight launch no matter what. NOTHING was stopping me. Not the ominous change in weather from raining in the day and snowstorm at night. I was excited since this was my first time going to a midnight launch of a console.
I was in a peculiar situation, I had my Switch at WalMart and the games I wanted at Game Stop. They're relatively close to one another but I obviously couldn't be in two places at once. Luckily I had a friend with me who was willing to hold a spot for me in WalMart while I got my games. After a long line, I got my games and then went to WalMart and waited there. After a near heart attack from a warning that there was a low stock of Switches, I got my own and headed back home to enjoy it.
I'm completely in love with this thing. Imagine holding a smaller version of the Wii U's game pad. My greatest fear for the Switch was the JoyCon controllers. They look really tiny and even though I have tiny baby hands myself, I like controllers with some weight to them and spread out my fingers to allow pressing buttons some breathing room. Finally holding it myself assuaged them and it felt right. The system itself doesn't take up any space at all, its mind blowing. There are only two cords, the HDMI and the AC adapter. They both fit comfortably into the dock in which the Switch itself goes into for when you want to play on the TV.
It's a very satisfying feeling to slide the JoyCons onto the Switch, especially because it makes the click sound we've heard in the advertisements. I've actually taken them on and off just to hear the sounds multiple times. Battery outside of the dock depends on what game you're playing. I got about 2-3 hours playing Breath of the Wild, 4-5 with other games. Its not very long but I'm fine with that. Should your battery die during a game before you reach a outlet to charge you can count on your game progress being saved. The operating system on the menu is really quick and simple and easy to use. All your games will show up first, any news will be on the left side of the screen. Its a smaller version of the PS4 to give you an idea of what it looks like.
I highly recommend getting a Switch if possible. I've had the fastest turn around on whether I thought I would enjoy it or not but its great and the games I have on it have been fantastic experiences for myself and my friends. I'm excited to see more games and features for the Switch. If you're looking for one, it'll cost you $299.99 and doesn't include a game in the package so you'll have to shell a little extra for a game.
I recommend Breath of the Wild, you'll see why in my next article.
