My First 5 College Friends

"Friend's are the family you wish you had."

My First 5 College Friends

College is crazy, to say the least. We attend orientation and meet a few people, exchange numbers, but rarely do we continue those long conversations after maybe a week or so. Luckily, in my situation, the first five friends that I came to know, since arriving at UB, were not at all shy from carrying on a conversation over school breaks.

Emily: She's one of the sweetest girls you could ever become friends with. She lends a helping hand whenever someone needs it. Throughout the first semester, she was the one I was able to count on to be there for me to discuss whatever occurred in my day. I've made countless memories with her, whether it was late-night drives to go get coffee or late-night venting sessions. There wasn't a time she wasn't there to listen.

Brendan: By far, the funniest guy you will ever meet. He knows how to make almost anyone laugh, and he has also become my best friend and that older brother I wish I had. At first, I thought he was the "shy" one, but after a couple of days, I realized he wasn't all that shy but rather outgoing young lad. Of course, once you got to know him, you will find that he is extremely nice and helpful. Brendan is the type of guy you can count on to make you laugh if you're in the worst mood ever. Whenever you're around him you can not stay mad at the pointless drama of college life.

Sam: I didn't know what to really expect at first with him. He seemed like he was to himself and didn't really open up to anyone. I remember talking to him during freshman orientation for about all of five minutes, not even. A few weeks after orientation passed, I decided to talk to him. It was complicated to talk at first because both of us were just a little busy. As school got closer, we talked more. He definitely was someone that I didn't want to lose. Once school started and I saw him the day after move in day, everything started clicking really well, and that was the start of a great relationship. You never know what will happen after five minutes of talking at orientation.

Leo: I really didn't meet him until move-in day because he lived in another part of the country. When I first started talking to him, he was really nice and seemed extremely trustworthy. Turns out that he's both. And to top it all, he is a great friend. I thought it was really cool that we had all lived in all of these different places but were immediately bonded by the unbreakable chains of friendship. We got along really well and became extremely good friends and got to know a lot about each other. He's definitely the type of guy you'd like to be friends with.

Brooke: When I met Brooke, it seemed like I knew her forever, and that's the best start to a friendship. I was able to bond with Brooke over the stupidest things, and she would laugh at nearly every comment I would make without even realizing it. (We'd be laughing for at least 20 minutes.) We have a numerous number of inside jokes that nobody will understand, and it's quite amusing to watch people look at us like we're insane.

I can't thank all of them enough for being my first college friends, and for making endless memories with me for my first semester of college.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
