If there is one thing that I am obsessed with, it is definitely making music playlists. I have tons and tons of playlists on my phone containing songs that make me feel a certain way, to songs that I am liking during a certain season. This is something I can spend forever doing, and I love to rediscover old songs while making them. Out of my thousands of songs on my phone, I was able to narrow it down to fifteen songs that I have been in love with this month, and there is a specific reason behind why I chose each song. Because my music taste has never revolved around a certain genre or time period, there are some old songs as well as some songs that do not necessarily match the others. So, here are my top fifteen songs that I have had on repeat all February.
1. Beyonce - "Best Thing I Never Had"
I remember when this song first came out, and I loved it then. It was only recently that this song had actually hit home for me. I was just in the mood to listen to Beyonce and I clicked on it because I knew the song, and it just hit me. The reasoning is self-explanatory just by listening to the lyrics. Since then, this song has been all over my playlists. Whenever I feel sad and think back, I just put this song on and it helps me feel more powerful and like I am "the best thing you never had" in the words of Queen B.
2. Jess Glynne - "Don't Be So Hard On Yourself"
This song is basically just one of my favorite songs ever. I was a really big fan of Glynne's "Rather Be" back when it was all over the radio. So, I decided to go check out her album, and it has definitely become one of my favorite albums ever. All of her songs are "feel-good" songs and they are so much fun to put on in the car and just jam out to. Her music is the type of music that you can listen to at any time and feel so happy.
3. Lily Allen - "Who'd Have Known"
Everyone probably knows the beginning to this song from listening to T-Pain's "5 O'Clock" from 2011, but no one knows that the verse actually came from this song. To me, this song is just the cutest love song ever and it is so much fun to listen to. The song describes Lily Allen starting to become intimate with, I am assuming, one of her friends. They are struggling through the awkward stage in between friends and partners where they are not quite sure what is happening, but they are not complaining. The song is just super cute and is really fun to sing and dance along to.
4. New Politics - "Harlem"
New Politics is an alternative rock band from Copenhagen. I am not sure how I even discovered them, but I was not even past the first chorus in this song when I knew I was in love with them. This song is yet another 'feel-good" song, and the syncopated rhythms in the song are nearly impossible not to tap along to. I highly recommend listening to their album, "A Bad Girl in Harlem" because they have such a great mix of music on there.
5. Starset - "Monster"
I wanted to put this song much higher on the list, but I decided to ease into it being as it is much heavier than the rest of the songs. This is currently my favorite song from this list and it just brings on all of the music feels. I was lucky enough to be able to see Starset in concert a couple weeks ago, and it was definitely hands-down one of the best concerts I have ever been to. The band originated in Columbus, Ohio and the singer is from Salem, Ohio. So, they kind of hit the close to home spot in my heart as well. Their music is like an electronic rock sound that I can mostly compare to Muse, except they are a bit heavier. Though they may not be too well-known yet, this song is definitely not one to just pass by.
6. Halsey - "Ghost"
I recently discovered Halsey over the summer because a lot of YouTubers that I watch listen to her music so I thought I would check it out. I have placed nearly her entire album in every playlist I made since then, and I still love it like the day I first listened to it. I feel like Halsey is really underrated as an artist and she is most definitely up there in my favorites.
7. Fleetwood Mac - "Landslide"
This song is one of the older songs on my list, and it is just amazing. Landslide is definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever and Stevie Nicks' voice is astounding. Do I even need to explain why I put this song on my list?
8. Beyonce - "I Was Here"
When I first listened to this song, I was nearly in tears. This is one of the songs that just really hit my heart for a lot of personal reasons. I have struggled depression and self-harm, so listening to this song really touches upon that. Whenever I am having a bad day, I can put this on and sing along as loud as I can to get all of the feelings out. I also just stumbled upon this song while listening to this album and I had no idea Beyonce would have a song like this. I just absolutely love it.
9. Katy Perry - "By the Grace of God"
This one kind of has the same backstory for me as "I Was Here." I have had this album since it was first released and I feel like I have never heard this song until recently. I was just listening to her album and I was completely zoned out until this song came on. It just grabbed all of my attention and I had to listen to it a few times on repeat to really grasp on to it because it just hit a soft spot for me. I also had the same feeling as I did toward Beyonce where I was not really expecting a song like this from her.
10. Mariah Carey - "Shake it Off"
I rediscovered this Mariah Carey song when I was listening to a throwback playlist somewhere. I honestly forgot how much I liked this song back in the day. Plus, it's funny hearing her sing about paging her, seeing where we are with technology today... All I have to say is Taylor Swift better step to the side because this is definitely the original "Shake it Off" ;)
11. Little Mix - "Move"
I don't even know where to start with this song... It started out as a guilty pleasure song because I do not really listen to radio music too often or girl groups for that matter. I have just learned to accept it because this song is just so much fun and addicting. This song reminds me of Destiny's Child and I have a feeling this song will still be amazing in ten or so years. For me, it is a song I can put on repeat, blast my radio, and just really jam out to and I always feel so happy afterwards. I love this song so much!
12. Nicki Minaj - "Save Me"
Here is probably the outcast of my entire playlist, but yes..I love Nicki Minaj. This song is actually really pretty and is way more emotional than her other songs. I chose this song because it also touches me like the Katy Perry and Beyonce songs did, and it just makes my heart feel so heavy.
13. Fitz and the Tantrums - "HandClap"
I have seen the album with this song literally everywhere, and the song has been featured in so many commercials. One day I caved and just listened to the full track and just wow... As someone who loves listening to instrumental music, just hearing the brass in the beginning immediately pulled me right in. There are so many different sounds in this song it is just purely amazing and so much fun.
14. twenty one pilots - "Doubt"
Twenty one pilots have become one of basically everyone's favorite bands. Their album, Blurryface is so popular and it deserves to be because it is amazing. The reason why I chose this song is not just because of the beats and the awesome chorus. I was able to relate to the message about anxiety in this song because it is something I have been struggling with, so it hit home for me. In all honesty though, this song is just great without even regarding the message, and listening to the music. Twenty one pilots are just amazing.
15. The Ready Set - "Being Afraid"
The last song on this playlist is probably the most important to me. The Ready Set is my number one favorite band and I could basically write a book on why. I felt like it was not one of my playlists without at least one song by him. The reason why I chose this song specifically is because he talks about finally getting everything together and really living life. This song just makes me feel so powerful and optimistic like I can do anything I put my mind to, and I should not worry about anything or anybody getting in my way because the world is mine for the taking. "I'm done being afraid."
