My Favorite Role Playing Games

A View Into My RPG Library

Sometimes my fellow gamers will ask me what is your favorite Role Playing Game. That is almost the same as asking me your favorite; child. I love them all equally. It's impossible for me to pick which game in my library is my favorite. So I'm just gonna make a list of them, in no particular order!

1. Sixth World

Sixth World is a Dungeon World hack of Shadowrun. Like Shadowrun, it is a cyberpunk urban fantasy setting that takes place in a world that is filled with corporate intrigue, crime, paranoia, and betrayal. However it strips away Shadowrun's clunky d6 based system and rebuilds it to use most of the standard d20 set of dice. Also Sixth World places more focus on narrative than stats and skills.

2. Kuro

Kuro is a French cyberpunk horror game that takes place in near future Japan. As one can infer, it is inspired by Japanese horror films, anime, and manga. The system uses 2d6 which is added to a character's attribute or skill value. The game blends the horror and cyberpunk elements masterfully, producing interesting adventure seeds. Example: imagine the Ju-on (or the Grudge, for you American audiences) equipped with cybernetic powers coming after YOU. Yeah, it's that INTENSE.

3. Pathfinder

A reworking of the world's oldest role playing game. Pathfinder takes its predecessor's flaws and problems and completely removes or fixes them. Not only is the game totally and legally 100% free (at www.d20pfsrd.com), but the Open Game License allows you to make and publish your own content for the game! The game uses your standard array of d20 dice (which for you non-gamers is a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and a d20).

4. Rifts

One of the most talked about games in the role playing games in the gaming community, Rifts takes place in the far future where and magicians and psychics run amok in Post Apocalyptic Earth. Often praised for its setting and shunned for its clunky system and lack of editing, the system is percentile yet uses a d20 for some rolls.

5. Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition

I just heard most gaming otaku just lose their collective shit right now. For those not in the know, the 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons was considered to be the worst edition in the franchise's 40-year history. They took the standard d20 rules and made twisted them around to make the game appeal to the console and PC gamers. Anyways, this game uses the d20 system but focuses on miniature use and combat over role playing. But still, this was my first role playing game and is near and dear to my heart!

And that's it with this list ladies and gentlemen! I hoped you guys enjoyed it. Give my RPG Facebook page a like!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
