Sooooo 2016 is over and despite it sucking politically, to me, it was actually a pretty damn good year for movies.
So here are my top 15 movies of 2016
If you agree with my list that’s great! If you don’t, that’s fine too it’s just my personal opinion so let’s get started

10. The Lobster
One of the most interesting and weird love stories I have ever seen. The blandess that is literally everywhere I thought added so much humor to the film because it was completely self aware and that’s the best kind of thing they could have done and the way it was executed was hilarious. I feel it’s hard to at least not appreciate a film like this because of how different it is… Well done Lobster… Well done.

9. Nocturnal Animals
Tom Ford is one fucked up genius….. That’s all.

8. Jackie
For some reason everyone was split on this one….. Well, I guess I’ll be the one to break the ice, this is one of the most beautiful looking films I have seen in 2016. The colors that director Pablo Larrain gives us just leaps out the screen saying this is my style, and it is beautiful. Every single scene for me had at least one standing point to it, whether it’d be Portmans performance, a great line of dialogue, a decision Larrain added to the film, or again even the colors. This is one of the most artistic films I have seen and I can’t ignore that, no matter what others say about it. To me it’s such a well made movie.
You all deserve a more thought out review of this.

7. Hacksaw Ridge
Mel Gibson you’re still crazy but I love you. This is one of the most brutal war films I have ever seen. To me, this is the real story of heroism. Someone in the military who refuses to take lives to save others in the battlefield. Nothing about this screams “HEY LOOK EXPLOSIONS I’M A WAR MOVIE JOIN THE ARMY”, it shows war like it’s the scariest thing ever, there’s blood flying everywhere, explosions, and people screaming and crying for mercy. But before all that, the development of Private Doss is actually very sweet and a little heartbreaking, talking about his family life, why he wants to serve, and his relationship life. To this day, I still can’t stop thinking about Hacksaw Ridge. Kudos to Mel Gibson and Andrew Garfield.

6. Don’t Think Twice
I feel like a lot of people won’t like this kind of movie because nothing really groundbreaking happens, it’s just a guy in an improv group having to leave because he got chosen to be a professional comedian on a ‘Saturday Night Live’ kind of show. But the reason why this movie is particularly special to me is because I’ve dealt with these kinds of friendships before so in the end this movie just feels realistic to me. It has a strong message about friendship and just because one person makes it big doesn’t mean you should just drop them as your friend, friendship is a very important thing and this movie tackles that pretty interestingly. I was never bored during this movie because I loved all these characters. They seemed like nice people I could actually hang out with, it’s very rare for me to actually want to “hang out” with a movie character, but make it a whole group? That’s impressive.

5. The Nice Guys
One of my favorite scripts of the year. This movie is so funny and so original, that it makes me sad that it flopped at the box office. I’ve shown this movie to all my friends and they all thought the exact same way. This is a film that doesn’t beat you over the head with it’s story and characters because it does take a little bit to develop, when I saw this for the first time I couldn’t even tell you what the story was, then I saw it again and it was clear to me. The story develops in such a comedic and clever way and it takes it’s time. Crowe and Gosling work like magic together delivering some of the funniest and even just best scenes in general of the year. Both characters go through their own certain arcs that make you love them and want to join them.

4. Swiss Army Man
This one of the most epic absurd movies I have ever seen. But it’s so beautiful in the way it’s made and so funny at the same time. Swiss Army Man is a movie that knows exactly what it is and has no apology for it. Most people just see farting corpse and assumes it’s a bad movie. This is a movie that means something, it’s trying to speak to us and give us their own message on humanity. The movie isn’t just farts, the movie is a lot more. I really never thought I would have to say that… Ever.
3. Manchester by the Sea
I’m just guessing now…. A lot of people thought I would have this as number 1 because I’ve been praising the hell out of this movie and inviting more friends to come see it with me. And for good reason. This is easily one of the most heartbreakingly realistic movies I have ever seen. Every single conversation a person had in this movie, I had before. The scene with Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams meeting up is one of the most heartbreaking things ever for me because I’ve been there before. I’ve had the big panic attack that Lucas Hedges had in this film before. It’s so real that it’s depressing. Casey Affleck gives one of if not, the best performance of the decade. I’ve been saying so many times that this guy is one of the next big things and I just sat there saying I told you so. His performance is heartbreaking and just so human, right when he came on screen, I didn’t know I was watching Casey Affleck…. Kudos….
1 and 2 are interchangeable for me so….
2. La La Land
This movie is just magical… Every musical number in this movie is incredibly catchy and beautiful and it’s shot like a 1950s musical. Every single shot in this movie looks unreal its not even fair. It’s eye candy and my heart can’t take it. Also this is the best ending for a movie I have ever seen. I literally cried at one point. I might like it better than Whiplash (the directors previous work) Damien Chazelle…. I love you. Direct everything please?
This is the worst review ever I apologize.

Alrighty my #1 of 2016 iisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
- Moonlight.
I’ve already reviewed this movie twice so I’ll be short and sweet. There’s not a single shot in this movie that feels misplaced. I didn’t see Chiron grow up, I experienced it. I was pulled in to the screen to see this boy grow up bullied and in a harsh environment. The music added so much beauty and unpredictability to the film it was hard to believe that it actually fit so well. I’ve never seen a movie so passionately made and so layered in the longest time and I think this is a movie that everyone needs to see. I have never seen a movie like this. It’s important. It’s not a white guilt movie, it’s not a “black lives matter” movie, this movie is life. It’s getting to experience someone growing up in the most heartbreaking way. Thank you Barry Jenkins.
