If you didn't know this already, one of my majors here at Simmons College is English. Though I haven't taken an English course yet in college, I took a lot of English classes in high school -- seven, to be exact. (Four of those were during my senior year.) I guess you could say I've read a decent amount of literature. One of the best parts about literature is analyzing the characters. As a straight female, I can't help but fall madly in love with some of the male characters I come across in books. Here are just a few of my favorite men in literature, in no particular order:
1. Mr. Darcy -- "Pride and Prejudice"![]()
Shout-out to my AP English: Literature and Composition teacher for instilling the love for Mr. Darcy in the hearts of everyone in my class. I feel like everyone who has ever read "Pride and Prejudice" has fallen (at least) a tiny bit in love with Mr. Darcy. He's a total jerk, but also a total softy on the inside, especially towards Lizzie. Can I please be Elizabeth Bennet? Please?
"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
2. Ron Weasley -- "Harry Potter" series
Oh, Won Won. You're such a Weasley, but I love it. Ron is loyal, funny, and adventurous. Just don't ask him to kill any spiders in the house.
"That's my girlfriend, you numpties!"
3. Augustus Waters -- "The Fault in Our Stars"
It's so difficult to keep yourself from being charmed by Augustus Waters. You love him more and more with every page you read. His thoughtfulness and persistence is everything a girl wants.
"I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you."
4. Neville Longbottom -- "Harry Potter" series
Always the underdog, never the Prince Charming. I love Neville. He is an amazing and loyal friend, and friendship is important in any romantic relationship. He would do anything to help his friends, even if that means he has to raise his voice and tell them that what they're doing isn't such a great idea.
"I'm mad for her. I think it's about time I told her, since we'll probably both be dead by dawn!"
5. Benedick -- "Much Ado About Nothing"
I'm just gonna throw this quote out there and watch from my computer screen as you fall in love with him, too.
"They say the lady is fair. 'Tis a truth, I can bear them witness. And virtuous -- 'tis so, I cannot reprove it. And wise, but for loving me. By my troth, it is no addition to her wit -- nor no great argument of her folly, for I will be horribly in love with her."
6. Jean Valjean -- "Les Miserables"
Good man + child = absolutely friggin' adorable. He took in a little girl he barely knew and raised her to be just as kind and good as himself. Sure, he was arrested, but for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his hungry family. He is the definition of selfless.
"Love each other dearly always. There is scarcely anything else in the world but that: to love one another."
7. John Proctor -- "The Crucible"![]()
All right, hear me out. Yes, I did read "The Crucible." Yes, I do know that he cheated on his wife with a teenager. But deep down, he's also a really good guy. He has this charm to him that is irresistible.
" God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat."
8. Jay Gatsby -- "The Great Gatsby"
Sorry, but if you don't love Jay Gatsby, then you didn't read "The Great Gatsby."
"I love her, and that's the beginning and end of everything."
