Summer is a great time to sit back relax and eat a ton of food. However, we are also still trying to keep our summer bodies. We all want to look extra fit in our bikinis and swim trunks.
That being said, it is important that we try to eat healthy all throughout the summer. It can be quite the challenge due to the countless barbecues you'll go to for birthdays and holidays such as the Fourth of July. Or the family get togethers that are centered around different types of pizzas and cakes. It is OK to indulge from time to time. However, I feel your pain. Here are some great healthy alternatives that can be just as delicious as pizza and cake.
1. There is nothing like a fresh avocado.
You can eat them anytime and with everything! I love to start my mornings off with two eggs and half an avocado. I find that they fill me up all morning, where as a bagel will only fill me up for about an hour. For dinner I like to cut up a whole avocado and make an avocado salad by topping it off with some turkey slices or even crab meat. It is delicious and super healthy!
2. During the summer I love a good fruit salad.
This is a great dish to serve at family gatherings and holidays. It is absolutely perfect for the fourth of July! You can buy strawberries and blueberries and put them in some vanilla Greek yogurt and you will have yourself a yummy red, white, and blue treat for the Fourth of July. What's great about fruit salad is you can make it however you want to. All you need is some fresh fruit.
3. Fruit smoothies always keep me feeling refreshed during the summer.
All you need is some fruit, Greek yogurt, and a blender. I love a good strawberry and banana smoothie. There are TONS of healthy smoothie recipes available online. If I know I have a long day at work I like to make a smoothie to go. It's much healthier and more filling than a cup of coffee.
4. A healthy alternative to a regular hot dog is turkey sausage.
Turkey sausage is much healthier than a hot dog. I also like the taste of them better because they tend to be spicier and have more of a flavor than a hotdog does. They are perfect for those barbeques!
5. I absolutely love a nice fruit pizza in the summer.
You can take your favorite pie crust and top it off with some Greek yogurt. I love to use strawberry yogurt and then top the yogurt off with some strawberries and blueberries. It is delicious and it is very pretty. It is also a lot healthier than a piece of cake!
6. I eat salads year round but during the summer I love a great strawberry and chicken salad.
Grab some lettuce, strawberries, and slice some chicken breast up. I prefer to top this off with some great raspberry vinaigrette. You can only find strawberries once a year so you should take advantage of them.
7. When I find myself craving a sweet dessert I like to make apple and peanut butter and honey nachos.
They are called nachos because you cut up apples into the shape of chips.
Then I top that off with some peanut butter and drizzle some honey on top of the peanut butter. I love eating this after dinner!
