The Beatles took the world by storm. They created sounds and songs like no other; their music changed society and brought new tastes to the world. According to Business Insider, The Beatles are the best selling band ever, with 178 million units sold. ‘The Fab Four’ produced sounds of peace, love, and hope. Each individual member produced songs of their own and has their own unique style. For instance, George Harrison explored his spirituality and implemented his experience in some of his songs. ‘Be Here Now’ is one of my favorite songs because of Harrison’s reference to spirituality and self-discovery. My father named me after their album ‘Abbey Road’; therefore, their music has been a vital part of my life and inspired me to live a life full of love, peace, and hope.
1. “And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me.”- Let it Be
2. “Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns/ and calls me on and on across the universe.”- Across the Universe
3. “Lay all your thoughts and surrender to the void.”- Tomorrow Never Knows
4. “Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly.”
5. “But tomorrow may rain so/ I’ll follow the sun”
McCartney wrote this song about his mother, but one can interpret it as the Blessed Mother comforting him. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary said to the angel Gabriel informing her that she will have a child, Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:8). The similar word use fascinates me. I interpret this line in a way that despite any situation there will always be a permanent, everlasting love and consolation in us. This can be a divine being, God, or anything/anyone else we think fits best. This consolation, sometimes without cause, is a source of hope and joy to us.
I resonate with this lyric because it tunes me into my spirituality and the inner love which rests within me. This divine love never ends and is unconditional. We all possess it and once we express it, it will spread across the world. Love has no limits, boundaries, and conditions; this lyrics expresses my feelings towards love.
Sometimes our thoughts can inhibit us from being our true self and reaching our full potential. I interpret “the void” as either our true self (our soul/Being), God, or a divine Source. If we slow down and meditate, pray, exercise, read, or whatever clears your head, we can connect with our inner self, the Universe, or God (if you believe in one). I recently realized that if I slow down and clear my mind occasionally, my creativity will emerge. Once my creativity sprouts, my mind will follow, and healthy thoughts will blossom. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions.
Paul alluded that him and Lennon wrote this song about the racial tension occurring during that time. Even today race still presents to be an issue; and this song implements hope and strength in the listener. Despite difficult and trying times, you can still fly with broken wings. The song calls for perseverance; this is the reason why I love these lyrics.
I love this lyric because I interpret it as to not stay in negativity; but to rather look towards positivity. Escape the bad; run towards the good. The lyric is simple, but very moving.
