My Experiences From Learning ASL

The amazing moments that I've had from learning ASL.

My Experiences From Learning ASL

This week I am going to write about American Sign Language, otherwise known as ASL. Many of you have seen people speak to each other through signing, but most people don’t understand the language well enough. ASL is a very useful language to learn because there are more people in the deaf community than you would think. This is a language that is just like every other language, but it isn’t as well known as it should be. I started ASL when I was young, but I recently picked it back up about a year ago. Since I've learned the language, it has changed my social interactions a lot.

I still don’t speak ASL fluently, but the people I have spoken to have mostly been very pleasant and helpful when I’ve had incorrect grammar. I have learned how to improve the way I sign from working at Target and going places in public, like deaf events when I went to BCC. Most of the time, I find that the deaf community is very down to earth and very kind. They will joke around with me if I feel intimidated by not being completely fluent; one time I laughed with a guy about my signing speed being a turtle’s speed. I have also had many other experiences at work and met some of the nicest and smartest people because I learned ASL.

Because I learned ASL, I met inspiring people in Ireland too. ASL has some similarities to Ireland Sign Language and because of this, I was able to understand a woman from Galway and one from Dublin when I drank tea after the zoo. Within the conversation I realized that a lot of the alphabet is the same and the sign for Boston is the same in both languages, but I enjoyed that the two women taught me the differences that I wasn't aware of. It was a nice moment and one of my favorite moments because I bonded with two people over tea that were very nice older women, even though I won't see them again. I think the beautiful thing about ASL is that you can bond with many people and get to know people in other places and see the world in a new way. It’s a culture and language that helps you bond quickly and I have had some amazing moments because I learned this language. In my opinion, more people should take ASL in America because it’s an amazing language and culture that has so much.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
