My Experience In Sorority Recruitment

The best process you never want to do again.

My Experience In Sorority Recruitment
Her Campus

My Labor Day weekend and the following weekend were spent in sorority recruitment. Going out for this process as a Junior was a little scary to me, as some would consider this a little late to rush, but I needed to give Greek life a shot. And I’m so glad I did. It’s now a little over a week since I accepted my bid and I couldn’t be happier. Recruitment was a long and tiring process, but I’m so glad I did it.

Recruitment started out meeting ten chapter in one day. That’s right, for about ten hours you are meeting ten groups of girls back to back. Of course this is very tiring, but I found it to be a great mood lifter. Talking with different groups of girls who are putting themselves out there and trying to become your friend gives off such positive vibes. I found myself leaving recruitment in such a happy mood and enjoyed making great conversations with new people. By the end of the day, you never want to talk about yourself again. Your cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing and your mouth is dry, but you come out with tons of new friendships and by the end of the process, new sisters too.

Throughout the process, you are told not to discuss your process with others. While this may seem hard and pointless, it’s something that definitely should be respected. Sorority recruitment is your process and you get out of it what you put in. It is a personal decision, and you do not want others to influence you. If you really like a certain chapter, but your friend does not, you do not want their negative opinion in your head. I did talk about my process with my friends and wish I hadn’t. Not because of where I ended up because I am very happy where I am, but it truly is a personal decision. Worrying about yourself and your process in recruitment is the best way to make the most out of your process.

Throughout recruitment, I you hear a lot of clichés. This includes “trust the process” and “everything happens for a reason”. I can now say that recruitment is over and done with, these sayings are very true. Trust the process of recruitment that it won’t fail you. You may go into wanting sorority chapter A, but sorority chapter B expresses more interest in you. Go with you chapter B and you’re going to be happy. Give every chapter your all and trust the process and you’ll end up exactly where you need to be. Everything truly does happen for a reason, especially in recruitment. I ended up in the last chapter I imagined myself in, but I couldn’t be happier. I am with some of my best friends and am making more friends every day. These girls are so happy to have me around and it makes me feel so good about myself. Knowing an amazing group of young women welcomed me into their sisterhood with open arms is such a blessing to me.

Recruitment was a long and tiring process, but it lead me home. The long days and hurt feelings of rejection were all worth it in the end. I am happy and confident I ended up exactly where I need to be. If you’re even thinking about going through recruitment, do it. You’ll come out of it a changed woman and with some amazing sisters. Give it a shot and you won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
