My Cousin Is My Best friend, And I am Grateful

You inspire me to succeed.

My Cousin Is My Best friend, And I am Grateful

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes can be big, small, popular or famous; however, some heroes can even be average. As many of you know my grandmother happens to be the biggest hero I'll ever have, but I also have another, and I guess it's always okay to have two. My other hero happens to be my older cousin, Anthony. Anthony is one of the biggest role models in my life and continues to guide me with making decisions even though I'm possibly the most indecisive person ever.

When it comes to academics, I look up to my older cousin because he is near-genius. I remember when I was little he'd tutor me and every time I got something right I'd get a snack. Eventually, I got fed up with having to get things right, so I'd just take the snack and hide under the table (I guess I assumed he'd never find me). I have always followed in his footsteps; whether it be choices of school, similar music selection, or favorite movies. My cousin helped me discover my talent with writing and even helped me choose which college I would attend. I am thankful that my cousin never forced his opinions on me but instead guided me to the best of his ability.

This past summer, we took a ten day trip to Italy, Switzerland, and Vatican City. The trip taught me a lot. Not only did I learn some history, but my eyes were also opened to all of the blessings that I have been granted. If it wasn't for my cousin, our trip wouldn't have been possible. It was an awesome experience, and I'm grateful for spending my first time out of the country with my cousin.

He's more than my cousin. He's my best friend and my brother. I'm thankful that he took me in as one of his younger "sisters," because I don't think my life would be the same without him. He is bright, successful, and intelligent. All of the things I strive to be are because of his example.

With all of the setbacks I've faced, I have always been able to depend on my cousin. He is one of my main motivators; whether I need encouragement or help, he's always there to lend a hand. One thing that I find truly makes my cousin a hero is that no matter the situation, no matter the toll it takes on him, he will always be there to support you, even if that means putting his issues aside. My cousin perhaps may not be the figure that you have in mind when you hear the word "hero." You might think of a comic book hero, a scientist, someone famous, or a humanitarian, but I think someone who puts everything aside in their life when you truly need them the most, is someone we should all aspire to be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
