To my best friend back home, thank you for all you have done.

To My Friend Back Home

If I have learned anything since I’ve moved into college and started a new life here, I’ve realized who my true friends are back at home. I’ve already made some special relationships here, but I’ll never forget the bond my best friend and I at home share. There are so many things I am thankful for and my best friend is one of them. We knew that this day would come, but nothing could ever separate us and we know that first hand. Every relationship that you will have in life will have its ups and downs, and we have most certainly experienced those ups and downs. I believe that you do make different relationships at college and those friends tend to remain your true friends for the rest of your life, but I also believe that my friend back home is also one who will remain in my life.

I just wanted to start off by saying thank you for always having my back no matter what. No matter what came my way, you would always be straight up with me and know how to help me. No matter how many times someone brought me down, you would always be the one to pick me back up. You’ve made me a stronger person, as well as a better person, and true friends like you are rare to find. I owe it all to you for all you have done for me. As little as getting me my regular coffee order at Dunkin Donuts, to bigger things like being there when I needed you at my worst.

Sure we’ve had our fair share of arguments, but they only make our friendship a true friendship. What friendship is perfect?Surely not ours, but I am surely thankful and truly blessed for it.

Thank you for always dealing with the pain that I am. Sure I complain a lot and don’t listen to you at first, but when I mess up I can then turn to you and say “thank you”. You always know what is best for me and what I deserve from people. You know how sensitive I am and what makes me mad. Having someone that knows you better than you know yourself is always such a special thing to have. I could say thank you so many times, but that doesn’t even begin to compare to all that you have done for me.

Thank you for the laughs, tears, adventures, late nights, early mornings, and being there when I needed someone to get food with. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t know what it’s like to have a true friend who just wants the best for me, as well as knows what is best for me. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be who I am today. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be writing this article.

Thank you for never giving up on me even when I had already given up on myself.

Thank you for being you.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
