My AOII Moment

A true showcase of how amazing this sisterhood is.

My AOII Moment
Savannah Behrmann

From the moment I joined the incredible sisterhood of Alpha Omicron Pi, I have always been told that I would experience an “AOII moment."

This moment could range from monumental moments such as initiation, to the simpler things like a sister being there for you during a time of need. It's a moment of clarity, where all of the puzzle pieces click together.

While I knew that joining a sorority would include fun date parties and cute t-shirts, I didn't know how much it would affect my life.

This past week was Greek Week at George Mason University. After months of preparation (no, not joking), all Greek organizations competed in a week of friendly competitions to raise awareness and money for Habitat for Humanity, and donate thousands of cans for those in need.

The week is very stressful, exhausting, and incredibly rewarding, regardless if you come out victorious or not.

This year, my team did.

We went in with the mentality of working our hardest, but we wouldn’t sacrifice all the fun that can come out of Greek Week. Oftentimes during the week, teams lose sight of what really matters: raising money and awareness, all while celebrating that we have the chance to be part of such a vibrant, active, and fun Greek community.

We were honored to be paired with the men of Kappa Sigma and Kappa Alpha Order, and made every day into one of bonding, laughing, and hard work, which, in turn, resulted in success. The week is especially important to me, because it’s one of the only times I have to bond with the majority of my sisters on a daily basis for I have an incredibly time-restricting and busy schedule.

After we had performed our satire Greek Sing performance, a spin-off of "Saturday Night Live," we waited anxiously to hear the results.

Anticipation was running through all of us as the week of work seemed to hit us at once. We watched as each of the categories were announced: winners of Shack, can drive, aquatics night, all the way down to Greek Sing. We were announced first for the satire performance, which we had been endlessly working on.

The exhilarating feeling ran through us like an electric line. Soon after, the MC announced our team as the winners of the entire week, and we sprinted to the stage in a roar.

We had just made history.

My AOII moment was not solely winning the competition, but rather, it was in that moment when all the things that I love about this sisterhood came into absolute clarity.

I felt the same excitement I felt when I opened up my Bid Day card and saw the three words: Alpha Omicron Pi.

I felt the love between sisters as I did during when I received my Big, and when my Little ran home into my arms.

I felt so much pride as I saw absolute joy on all of my sisters' faces; the feeling of seeing our hard work pay off in the most incredible way.

The feeling was truly indescribable.

My sisterhood is one filled with confident, diverse, and amazing individuals, who all bring something unique and different to the table. This week allowed sisters the chance to showcase their particular passions and talents. We laughed, cried, and poured hard work into everything that we did.

While joining sorority is supposed to be fun, it is also supposed to challenge you. You are supposed to be pushed outside your comfort zones and be pushed to your limit in many aspects to gain confidence within yourself and your abilities.

My AOII moment was truly a showcase of how amazing this sisterhood is. We overcame all the odds and people’s speculations and came out on top, all while strengthening our sisterhood.

I have met some of the most genuine, caring, and talented girls in my chapter. Greek Week truly emphasized that. Each and every one of my sisters has done more for me than they will ever realize, and I will always cherish that feeling I had when I experienced my AOII moment.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
