My America Is

"America is not just a country, it is an idea"

On the night of November 8th, 2016, I felt as if I was in a different world. I saw cheers of certainty, but also saw tears of uncertainty. I felt numb by the reality of the moment we were in, win or lose. I felt at a loss for the days to come, or for the words to speak. Everyone was watching each other, waiting for something to happen. We were all still in this moment. We were all feeling something that night. The following day, I went to my theater class. We came together and sang, moved, and voiced our certainties and uncertainties. We moved throughout the space to express our love, our life, and human condition. I needed this. I needed a safe space to create with my artists.

My Professor asked us to finish this sentence, "My America Is..." To me, My America is this,

My America is

My America is scared

It has brought fear to be dared

A tear in all our hearts

Filled with fears of being broken apart

We share insults from ridge to ridge, on how to build the same bridge

My America is going to be the land of the free, and home of the brave

We will have the resilience and the determination, to be a great nation

My brothers and sisters, my teachers, my artists, my friends, we will create a world of trends

Filled of love, and compassion, in the greatest fashion

Muslims, Latinos, African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans,

LGBTQ, Disabled, will can all be able to make this great

We have a voice, filled with power, in the greatness for desire

A desire for rights, love, and hope

We don't have to cope

How dare someone tell you to cope

Don't leave America, believe in America

I believe in you

We can make this right, both equal for us, too

Inform, make this be the norm

That we have a right to be free, despite those who disagree

Make them see what it means to believe and make that choice to be the voice of reason,

Don't riot or burn the flag,

Burn with passion

Burn with love

My America is under attack

Through the lack of knowledge and composure

You can't treat me like that, sir

Our gender and our race

We have a lot at stake, and there cannot be any mistakes

This America is not worth these risks and fates of human beings

We all need to quit being inhumane

My America, will be filled with love and understanding, so we can stay standing

My America, is your America, an equal one, we will strive for that

Let no one take you away from that

I wouldn't be okay with that

It wouldn't be okay

It has never been okay.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
