Homesickness. Stress. Syllabus Shock. All of these are things you might experience as a college freshman, and sometimes it doesn't go away.

This is my junior year of college, second as an on-campus student, and hundredth as an over-stressed person. As I am writing this article I am chugging coffee, mentally practicing a presentation I will be giving in less than 15 hours, and trying to keep myself emotionally in check. College is rough, but here are some tips that you need to know when you get there.

1. Go To Bed.

Set a time to go to bed. I know it's silly to have a "bedtime" now that you are an adult, and please, who has had a bedtime since they were in 6th grade? But seriously, sleep is important. It helps you focus, stay healthy, and also makes you way less cranky with other people. It may seem ridiculous to tell other people that you can't do something because it's "past you bedtime," but sleep is bae. Literally.

2. Work Ahead.

I, as well as a plethora of others, have a long and hard struggle with procrastination. It is so easy to just tell yourself you have plenty of time to do an assignment and really, you deserve a break, but this nasty habit has continually made me crazy stressed. Working ahead is freeing and it opens up more opportunities to do things you want to do in the free time you create.

3. Get Involved.

At college there are lots of different clubs, sports, or groups you can become a part of. Getting involved in activities helps keep the homesickness at bay. It allows you to step out of your comfort zone and meet new people. It's a great way to become more connected with those around you. Although you need to keep in mind the course load you have and not commit to too many things and over-extend yourself.

4. Take A Break.

While it's easy to want to do everything with everyone, your brain, body, and emotions have limits. You can only do so much before you crash, and crashing is not fun. Set time aside for yourself when you know you are being stretched thin. Let yourself take a nap, or watch some Netflix alone. Being an adult is all about knowing your limits and pacing yourself.

College years are some of the best years you will ever have. You are surrounded by people your age who actually want to be there and learn beside you. Enjoy it, embrace it, and experience it to the fullest. Good luck, and may the power of coffee be with you.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
