I decided this week I really wanted to try to do an interview. Lacking a more interesting subject, I interviewed my 8-year-old son. He's a pretty interesting subject and I even went as far as to add in a little bit of commentary.
What is the most difficult part of being a kid?
“Well you have to go to bed early. You have to go to school. You have an early bedtime. You have to do what your parents say. You have to do chores. Most of the time your parents are too busy to play with you and sometimes you can't get what you want.”
Sounds like pretty typical kid problems to me. The troubles that every child faces in life. Man, wish I could have an early bedtime!
Do you like being a kid?
“No.”
Okay, let’s see what the reasoning behind this is. I mean, most adults wish we could go back to being a kid.
Why?
“It's lame.”
Oh. No real deep answer. Just a typical kid answer that it’s lame. You know what’s lame? That answer.
What is the most fun thing about being a kid?
“You get to play video games.”
Fair enough. I started playing video games when I was a kid, and I loved them so much I never stopped playing. Wish I had more time to play now. Except said kid is playing.
What is something you wish your parents didn't do?
“Go to work.”
Yes. What an awesome kid. I wish I didn't have to go to work either. I would love to stay home with you and play video games.
How would they earn money to buy things if they didn't go to work?
“They would find money.”
See, my kid knows the deal. You should definitely be able to just find money. Walk outside, oh look, there’s a fiver just waiting for me.
Where would they find it?
“In the streets.”
My kid just wants a perfect world where it rains money into the streets. Who doesn't want that? It would literally solve most of my problems.
What could be done to make school better for you?
“If the chairs were comfy.”
Money in the streets? Comfy chairs? I’m starting to think my son just wants to be a king. This interview has taken a strange new turn.
Do you think comfortable chairs would help you learn better?
“No.”
Yup. The comfy chairs aren't for any purpose other than the comfort of his bottom. I had hope for this. Let's go on to more serious topics.
If you were the president, how would you want to change our country?
“Make everyone learn and make homeless people have homes.”
Look at that, how good-natured and caring. Times like this he makes me proud to be his mom.
Do you think being president would be a hard job? Why or why not?
“Yes, because you have to make decisions for laws.”
Nothing but truth on the matter at hand.
What is one of your favorite memories?
“Me and my pop pop mowing the lawn on the tractor.”
My father passed away less than a year ago. This made me tear up a little. My dad was such an important figure in my son's life and I am completely okay with and happy about the fact that one of his most precious memories is with my dad.
If you could change anything about the world, what would it be?
“That there were no bad guys.”
We’re big on superheroes in this house.
If there was one thing you could tell every kid in the world, what would it be?
“You are cool no matter what anyone else says.”
Now if only I could get him to remember this and live by these words. Maybe after this interview he will.
This kid, no matter how crazy he can make me at times, proves over and over that he really is an amazing little dude. And I love him dearly and hope he grows into just as amazing of a young man.
