My 2mom | The Odyssey Online

“What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience, humor, comfort, lessons in life. And, most importantly, cookies.” Rudy Giuliani.

Grandmas are very special ladies. I’ve heard about every single name for a grandma – nana, nanny, grammy, gamma, and grams but my “2mom” is one of a kind, not only in her name but in everything else.

My 2mom inspires me daily because, as her name indicates, she has been like a second mom to me all throughout my life. I am the youngest of five grandchildren so, of course, I was babied and treated like the favorite. My three cousins and brother would get so jealous of me because, in elementary school, I got to stay with 2mom the most at her beach front condo on Tybee Island when I was on summer break. We would go to nice dinners, walk on the pier and even go shopping.

When I was approaching third grade my 2mom decided she needed to move to my hometown of Milledgeville, Ga., so she could see me on a regular basis instead of just school breaks. Back then, I didn’t really appreciate her big move. I was excited that she would be close to me, but I never really considered that she would be leaving her favorite place and her condo behind. Now I appreciate her move more than ever because it lead to us having a wonderful relationship. To this day, we still share a very special bond.

I have so many memories growing up with my 2mom and in every single one I can’t think of a time when she didn’t put me first. No matter the situation, my 2mom always loved me and made sure I knew it, without a doubt. To this day, she is still living in Milledgeville, just 10 minutes away from my house. Whenever I go back to my home town on a school break or long weekend I always make sure to help her run errands or go out to eat with her. I even take her to the grocery store, which I absolutely hate, but she keeps me on my toes making sure to stop and read every single food label! As I grow older I realize that I owe a lot to my 2mom. She is a role model to me and one day I hope to be half the woman and grandma that she is.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
